The three best onboard laps of the Nurburgring*
Videos of An oversteery Lamborghini, Biblical rain and a man in a fleece
With of the release of that astonishing 6min52sec onboard lap of the Nordschleife in a Huracan Performante, I thought I'd post three of my all-time favourites.
Things get particularly interesting in this video when the tyres start going off during the second half of the lap. It was set at a time when everyone was getting very excited about whether a McLaren P1 could or couldn’t do a lap in under seven minutes. Then the significantly cheaper, relatively old school Aventador SV showed up with its glorious sound track and did this. The man behind the wheel is Pirelli test driver Marco Mapelli who also set the newly released 6.52 lap in the Huracan Performante.
In torrential rain, at night, during a race. It’s incredibly intense just watching this POV video of Leh Keen grabbing armfuls of lock in his 911, while dealing with standing water and myriad flashing lights, so what it must have been like for him boggles the mind. Look out for the moment in the second Pflanzgarten.
This is possibly the best thing anyone has ever done while wearing a fleece. Michael Vergers is, by common consent, one of the most naturally talented drivers out there. No, the video quality isn’t that great, but the commentary is fascinating and his commitment over the bumps in the lightweight SR8 makes you catch your breath every time.
*These are just my current favourites and I’ll probably change my mind tomorrow…
