The Toyota Yaris is the 2021 European Car of the Year
The Japanese hatchback came first with 266 points
For the second time in a row, the Geneva International Motor Show remained closed due to the current crisis. This does not mean that the automobile world is standing still, as the ceremony electing the European Car of the Year (COTY) during the Swiss Motor Show was once again held online.
The jury, consisting of 59 motoring journalists from 22 countries, chose the Toyota Yaris as the winner for the 2021 edition. With a final score of 266 points, the Japanese city car came out on top against 38 other candidates, including six finalists which were also very close to victory.
The new electric Fiat 500 came second with 240 points. The Cupra Formentor sporty SUV follows very closely behind the Italian with 239 points and thus closes the podium. The Volkswagen ID.3, however, which was placed as a favorite right from the beginning of the competition, slips into fourth place with 224 points.
Behind the German is another model of the Volkswagen group, the Škoda Octavia, which ends with a score of 199 points. Despite a particularly high price, the Land Rover Defender manages to take sixth place with 164 points. The quirky Citroën C4 closes the finalists group with 143 points.

Good news! Compact city cars are the way forward instead of high street tractors. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
No matter how many Chelsea tractors are sold, there will be beaten by the likes of the Yaris, fiesta and corsa. The world wants big cars, but they need small ones.
GR Yaris! That’s the one I want.
Are looks not a criteria?
They are! This is why the 500 and the Formentor are at the top too. But I think that the reasonable price, the good equipment and the hybrid powertrain of the Yaris made a big difference there.
Okay, but I still think that hideous looking cars should be disqualified from the start.
The mighty Yaris!
I absolutely love this hatch
Oh good!
