The Turbo Mazda6 Will Have More Torque Than A WRX STI
The Mazda6 was always a sweet chassis searching for more horsepower. Today Mazda announced that the Mazda 6 will use the same SKYACTIV-G 2.5T direct-injection turbocharged gasoline engine that debuted in the Mazda CX-9 crossover.
The SKYACTIV-G 2.5T develops 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque all while returning a respectable 28 miles per gallon on the highway in the CX-9. I've experienced this engine in the CX-9 and it has no issue pulling the 3,500 lb CX-9. I imagine in a 3,179 lb Mazda6 this engine will have no issue propelling this sedan to some respectable performance figures.
There's still no word on other performance upgrades to match the engine or the exact name of this trim. We're hoping for the CX-9's AWD system and the return of the MazdaSpeed6.
The new Mazda6 will be more than a powerful turbocharged engine. Mazda's i-ACTIVSENSE has been upgraded to allow the radar guided cruise control to bring the Mazda6 to a stop and then set off again.
We're very excited for the next iteration of the Mazda6 and look forward to experiencing the added power to compliment the athletic chassis. The last Mazda6 we tested stunned us with it's refinement and shear driving pleasure but more horsepower is always welcomed.
