The Wanted's Tom Parker has been diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour
The 32-year-old former boyband member broke the news via an exclusive interview with OK! magazine and on social media
Tom Parker, a former member of boy band The Wanted, has been diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour at the age of 32. This has happened not long after announcing that he was expecting a second child. He broke the terrible news via an exclusive interview with OK! magazine and through social media. Both him and his wife Kelsey Hardwick had kept his battle with cancer private until very recently, choosing to speak out now in order to raise awareness about the condition as well as to let everyone know what's going on.
Speaking with OK! magazine, Parker and his wife explained that he had had several seizures within the last year, including a particularly nasty one that happened 6 weeks ago on a staycation in Norwich that prompted him to go to a hospital to get checked out. He had to stay in hospital for three days to have tests (which included a COVID test) and an MRI scan. It was there that he was given the horrible news that he had stage 4 glioblastoma. "I’m still in complete shock, it’s so much to take in," explained Parker: "I knew something wasn’t right, but I never expected it to be this. You never think this will happen to you."
Parker has not been given a prognosis (his wife explained that "he would literally sit here and count down the days and not live his life" if he had been given one) and the couple are both trying to stay positive ("I’m in groups with people going through the same thing," said his wife, "and they said there are people who were told they had three months to live and they’re still going five years later."). Parker is adamant that he wants to fight long enough to see the birth of his second child; when he was asked about whether he had thought about the idea that he could not be around when the child is born, he replied with "No, because I’m going to be here, I’m going to fight this."
Parker further said that his former bandmates have been incredibly supportive since the diagnosis. "Obviously all the boys were as shocked as we were," said Parker. "They are gutted by the news, but they’ve been incredibly supportive. Jay has been round to see us a few times since we got the news and is reading up on everything he can and Max was here last week. Siva and Nathan obviously live a lot further away, but all four of the boys have been texting regularly and sending through different articles and possible treatments and therapies that they’re all reading about." The couple also received a huge amount of support from public figures and fans via social media from Monday morning onwards.
The Wanted achieved huge mainstream success in the early 2010s with hits such as "All Time Low" and "Glad You Came". After The Wanted split up in 2014 Parker moved into musical theatre, playing Danny Zuko in a touring production of Grease. He also reached the semi-finals one year on Celebrity Masterchef.
My thoughts are with Tom Parker and his family and I hope that he'll pull through. Having any kind of cancer, let alone stage 4 cancer at the age of 32, is a horrible diagnosis.
