The Widow In the Shadow: The 930 Turbo
This is my second favorite car of all time. And it is the most important Porsche ever created.
This Porsche in particular, the 930 Turbo is what gave Porsche a huge name for itself. It had characteristics that no other car had ever been seen with and its performance was incredible in the time. It simply is the best Porsche 911 ever built and has become my second favorite car of all time. I have been lucky enough to have seen a couple and that has only further sparked my passion for the 911 itself.
This 930 Turbo is equipped with the 3.0 L single-turbocharged flat-6. And yes it is air-cooled. The way it should be in a 911. It produces 256 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 243 lb ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. The flat-6 has single overhead camshafts, which made the design a little more simple. Mated to the mill is a 4-speed manual transmission, giving the driver a more exciting driving experience. It might not seem like much performance today, but it still is in a car of this era and that is this size. The 930 weighed about 3,362 lbs. Not all that heavy.
The 930 Turbo being very powerful, small and having the powerful flat-6 in the rear of the car, meant that the car would be prone to oversteer and it is still known to be one of the most difficult cars to drive. This is what makes it a pure drivers car. You have to be very skilled to even control the 930 Turbo. The car is instantly recognizable for its fuchs wheels, sleek shape and extravagant whale tail. The spoiler was created to feed extra air into the engine for more performance. And it looks glamorous in the process. Nothing is too complicated with this cars design and after seeing many in person, I think it is one of the most beautiful cars not just from a design standpoint, but also from an engineering standpoint.
When you make it into the interior you notice something. There is nothing ridiculous inside. You get three, pedals, a stick, a steering wheel and the amazing CR Typ RW stereo. Heck yeah. This is exactly how a car should be. No silly screens or digital controls. You get five analog dials. This became a 911 tradition to have five dials. This interior feels incredibly special just because of how simple it is. I am a massive fan of the car inside and out. So there you have it. The 930 Turbo 3.0 L. This is the greatest Porsche ever made and nobody in the world will ever be able to change my mind.
