The worst car moments of 2018

2018 has been a massive year for the car industry, with huge upheavals of mindsets and opinions occurring that will echo throughout the automotive storyline for years to come. It was the year that we took electric cars more seriously that ever before, the year that autonomy became slightly more real and one that saw a quite thunderous downfall of the diesel engine as a method of propulsion.

Highlights include the launch of the new Suzuki Jimny, the resurgence of Alpine into the sportscar market, as well as a new M5. But with the highs come the lows, and by golly have there been some shockers over the last 12 months.

You probably have your own personal lowlights that stick out from 2018; maybe your car's alternator packed up when on a road trip or possibly that rust repair that was supposed to take two weeks to fix took more along the lines of two months. Whatever has befallen your automotive escapades this year, let us take you through our worst moments from the car world that 2018 had to offer.

The BMW Vision iNext made us fear for our optical health

The lovely pond in the foreground has done nothing to help this monstrosity become a looker

Some concept cars are good. Some concept cars are bad. But some concept cars are unbelievably horrific. And into that category went the Vision iNext from BMW.

As if the grilles on its production cars weren't already silly beyond belief, the knashers on this vision of BMW's future make it scarily ugly. The company says the car will answer the question of “How will the BMW Group design a car that doesn’t have to be driven any more – but can be?”. I'll take an I-Pace thanks.

The Jaguar E-Pace as a thing

It doesn't drive well, its engines lack emotion and it just didn't work for me as a thing

Speaking of Jaguars, the biggest letdown of the year has to go the the E-Pace. I love a Jag normally, but the fact that its new small SUV is essentially an archaic Freelander was verging on unforgivable.

Due to its ancient construction, it actually weighs more in a certain spec than the predominantly aluminium F-Pace. And looking at the two cars beside each other, that seems beyond daft.

The Mercedes-AMG One being delayed

The hypercar is supposedly nine months behind schedule

We can't wait for the next breed of hypercars to come along but Mercedes' effort seems to have been riddled with complications. The F1-engined AMG One has been under development at the test facility at Millbrook and has apparently been struggling to drive at low speed to qualify it as a road car.

Deliveries were supposed to occur some time in 2019 but due to problems with modifying the extremely complex powertrain for the road, it looks like we could be waiting until 2020 before we see one being delivered to a customer. This made us sad.

The boss of Nissan was a dick

Don't try and look smug beside your GT-R Carlos, we all know what you did

Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn was fired and arrested in November for his money-fiddling exploits that have cost the company millions. Ghosn was also chairman of the Renault-Nissan Alliance but it came crashing down into one big mess.

Nissan has lost out substantially on the stock market due to this mishap, with the term 'misconduct' being used to describe multiple episodes of penny pinching and misuse of company assets.

BMW showed us the X7

Lord have mercy on our eyes

I'm afraid 2018 has been the year of the BMW grille. And although the concept car mentioned above is easily the worst looking thing to be revealed this year, the X7 takes the prize for the most aesthetically-challenged production car we've seen.

The front grille seems comically photoshopped in the release pictures and the side profile makes it look like the designers used the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Nautilus as inspiration.

All kinds of wrong right here

So there you have it, the worst happenings from within our ever-changing industry from the last 12 months. I'm sure there are ones that we've forgotten, so post your personal car-based gripes from 2018 in the comments below!
