There’s a new VW Polo, and it looks like a Golf

It’s huuuge

Automakers have been downsizing their engines but upsizing the actual cars. The MINI lost the right to call itself a ‘MINI’ years (and kg, and cm) ago and it’s the same with VW. The new Polo measures 4,074 mm (160.3 in) in length, which makes it around 380 mm (15 in) longer than a 1974 Golf. Wow.

The VW Polo was launched in 1975 and VW sold over 18 million units across six generations. This is the restyled version of the sixth-gen Polo and it looks pretty good. Even though it’s too big.

The LED headlights have been upgraded, and there’s also a new digital cockpit from which you can control, among other things, the ‘IQ.DRIVE Travel Assist’, a semi-autonomous system.

Several engine options are available, including a 1.0-litre petrol engine (also available with LPG power), a diesel, and then of course a GTI version. By the way, four trim levels are available: Life, Style, R-Line and GTI.

Prices start from around £18,000 and to be honest, I gotta ask, why would you need a Golf these days? The Polo is the Golf.

  • 18.000 pounds is way too expensive. they crossed the threshold from"people's car" (Volks-...) to "luxury car" either with the 2001 Passat, which was more than 40,000 DM then (= above 20,000 EUR), or with the Phaeton (hence its name).

And you don't fit into parking spaces already. Because those didn't grow at the same rate as the cars did.

Traveled behind a Duster today: saw its stupid pushed-out wheels from behind, was immediately reminded of a Bobby Car.

    • You’re probably better off with a pre-owned Polo with like 10k miles on the clock

    • I've had two pre-owned Polos with 12 years of driving on the clock. Very nice, sturdy, spacious cars. Even got my mountainbike into the back. If not for that wild boar, I'd probably still be driving the second one of them nowadays. Really hurt...

  • I hate that they got rid of the scirocco which was a pretty good car and really fun but kept the polo even through it is almost the same as the golf. It ticks me off

    • The polo has always been a size class down and therefore cheaper then the golf, it’s like saying why does ford need the fiesta AND the focus? Both are in different markets.
