These are the BEST cars I drove in 2018
Somebody once said that the person travelling at the fastest pace does not always arrive at their destination first. And that's true. In fact when it comes to fast cars, there's a good chance you never make it at all.
It's no wonder, really, when you consider just how fast cars have become. The new Bentley Continental GT, for example, is a sub-4 second 0-62mph monster that will continue well past the legal limit and into death territory within no time at all.
Then there is the McLaren 600LT, which is so raw an experience that even if you do arrive with a heartbeat you will be high on adrenaline and dripping in sweat. Then again, that could also be because the test car I drove earlier in the year had no air conditioning.
Other cars I loved in 2018 were tortoise slow in comparison, but then the Ford Fiesta ST is more fun than the ST200, maybe even more fun than the Focus RS on congested UK roads. So fun, in fact, that I completely forget about the B-Max rear end.
Then there were the cars that made me happy to plod along without a care in the world. The Ford Mustang and the fancier Bullitt Edition, for example. Although if I owned one, the weekly fuel bill would keep me up at night.
Meanwhile electric cars have been showing great progress in terms of range and therefore usefulness. My favourite outside of a Tesla is the Jaguar I-Pace because, I kid you not, it's probably the easiest SUV to drive. Ludicrously fast, if you desire.
I also liked the Volvo XC40 because I could just about afford it, the McLaren Senna because it makes me wish I could, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio for being a 503bhp family car, the Peugeot 508 because stylish saloons are always cool and the Bentley because it has the best interior of any car I have ever driven.
If 2019 is as exciting, I'll be making another video in 360-odd days. But should I ignore that opening advice and end up at the pearly gates of petrolhead heaven early, here's an even better nugget of wisdom – that it's not the destination that matters, but the journey itself.
And all of the cars in my top 10 made A to B pleasing, which a rarer thing than you might expect. Thanks for watching.
