this concept could have solved a housing crisis

The car was made to solve a housing crisis it is said to be versatile Its a Toyota so cant say they are lying.

what is this practical thing?

This is the 2001 Toyota DMT concept which was unveiled at the 2001 Tokyo auto show with a slogan "open the door! the automobiles Bright future. I would not want this to be the automobiles bright future, imagine every car in the world has a Toyota hiace if this was the automobiles bright future, luckily it didn't go that way.

What does DMT mean

It means Dual mode traveler which sounds like a bag or suitcase advert. Dual mode refers to the hybrid nature of this car. This Toyota is designed like a Toyota, conventional up front and spacious in the back. Its a concept though so expect some weird stuff since its Japanese.

Why did they create the DMT

the car was made to solve housing problems for young Japanese people and Toyota did a pretty good job making it functional but god that design, Youngsters want cool sports cars like the 300zx and Nissan r34 skyline not a van but it would have attracted a few if it had a 2jz or a v8. This is a home office away from home. The owner can design the interior and use his imagination.

Specs please?

The car is said to have a 2.4-litre petrol engine with a CMT. This engine was used in the rav 4 models as well. If it had it would have seen a hybrid drivetrain.

The weird Japanese concept cars quirks

Well there is nothing much other than the 23 inch wheels and the customizable home office away from home. The car also has a sunroof which is terrible, Why put a sunroof in a van, it will not attract 20 year old Japanese people who want a evo 5 and a Honda nsx. This car must have inspired the hiace.

I am not living in this

I would prefer my apartment rather than a van with limited space. Imagine if all the houses in the world were replaced with DMTs, god that would be depressing and claustrophobic. If you are worried about the lack of space in the DMT just park at the nearby park and set up camp but make sure to close the doors since the street dogs will love to feast on your food. I guess all these answers explain why it never went into production.

What I think about the DMT

its pants really, what were Toyota thinking when they came up with this. Its ugly and a bit claustrophobic and this wont solve any housing problems. You can get a good apartment for a good price. The car just doesn't make sense to me, if the car was directed towards the adventures they would rather go for a overlander or a camper not this. This does not work as a office aswell since it will be pretty odd working in a box and most Japanese's companies have offices. The car could have worked in the pandemic for the many people stuck in various countries who wanted to be extra safe.
