This glorious animation shows the evolution of Le Mans winners through the ages

The GT40s are unbelievably stunning

When it comes to motor racing, it doesn't get much better than Le Mans for me. You can stick your F1 and WRC, the annual race at the Circuit de la Sarthe is as good as it gets.

If you need a quick recap over the 95 years of race winners from the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the animation above takes you through the side profiles of every champion that has blessed the sacred French tarmac.

My personal favourites are from the late 1980s where we saw the likes of the dominant Porsche 962, the stunning Jaguar XJR-9 and the brutal Sauber C9, all of whom soon gave way to the F1-inspired beauties that were the 1992/3 Peugeot 905s.

Anyway, enough from me, enjoy this rather satisfying history lesson.

  • This is so much better enjoyed at 1/4 speed so you can actually appreciate each car flashing by.

  • It's the 1980 Le Mans winning Rondeau M379B for me. I love the story of a local guy building a car in a shed beside the track and fitting it with an old F1 engine which was infamous for shaking apart, and then winning the race against a semi-factory Porsche with Jacky Ickx on board.

    • It's probably the biggest success story in motorsport. It's a travesty that the Rondeau isn't better known.

  • I don't know why but I'm very into Pre-War Le Mans cars

  • The Mercedes-Sauber C9 is one of the best sound Le Mans cars of all time. That turbo V8 sounds amazing flying by
