This is now officially the fastest street car…in the world, and it can be yours

A Tuatara makes a 331-mph run in Nevada

Should you be eager to spend some of your expansive wealth and aren’t worried about getting a ticket, an American carmaker may have something you want.

SSC North America announced Monday that the company’s Tuatara model had set a new record as the fastest production vehicle in the world after averaging 316 mph in the Nevada desert.

According to the company, the 1,750-horsepower vehicle, called “Tuatara” made two on a stretch of State Route 160 on Oct. 10, one at 301 mph and the other clocking in at 331 mph. British racing driver Oliver Webb, who most recently competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans last season and the FIA WEC series, was behind the wheel for the test outside Pahrump, a flat desert area between Las Vegas and Death Valley. Official record-keeping requires an average of two runs, which is how the 316 number was reached. The previous record was made by the Koenigsegg Agera RS in 2017. In addition to the fastest production speed record the Tuatara also picked up the record for Fastest Flying Mile on a Public Road (313.12mph) and Fastest Flying Kilometer on a Public Road (321.35mph).

“There was definitely more in there. And with better conditions, I know we could have gone faster,” said Webb. “As I approached 331 mph, the Tuatara climbed almost 20 mph within the last five seconds. It was still pulling well. As I told Jerod (CEO Jerod Webb), the car wasn’t running out of steam yet. The crosswinds are all that prevented us from realizing the car’s limit.”

Officials were on site to verify all world record criteria was met -- including review of Dewetron GPS measurements, which tracked the speed runs using an average of 15 satellites -- and to confirm the new record.

“It’s been ten years since we held this record with our first car, the Ultimate Aero, and the Tuatara is leagues,” CEO Jerod Shelby (no relation to Carroll) said in a press release. “We came pretty close to meeting the theoretical numbers, which is astonishing to do in a real world setting on a public road. America’s new claim to victory in the ‘land-based space race’ is going to be tough to beat.”

Since this is a production car, you can own one of the 200 expected to me made. As for the price? Well as the adage goes if you have to ask… (estimates are just over $1.2 million US).

  • So it can be yours if you've got $1.2 million lying around. I can spot a problem there for many who are interested in getting one.
