Hummer is back, and they aren't messing around. The highly anticipated Hummer electric pickup has been revealed, and is staggeringly fast. Not only that but the infotainment screen hides a neat quirk. 2023 will bring an SUV variant that has, presumably, the same powertrain and styling. The new Hummer will compete with the likes of the Rivian R1t, Nikola Badger, Bollinger B2, and upcoming Ford models.
Hummer was known for their huge, gas guzzling SUVs, this has changed. The new Hummer Edition 1 is fully electric and has a range of 350 miles. Its battery pack specifications haven't been released yet, however they must be pretty big, as the new Hummer Edition 1 puts out 1000 horsepower and 1000 lb-ft of torque thanks to its 3-motor setup - take that Rivian. This massive power output can be recharged via 800-volt fast charging and allows the super truck to accomplish 60 mph in just 3.0 seconds.
The previously mentioned three-motor setup is quite intricate and consists of one motor at the front and two at the back. The front motor is hooked up to a locking differential while the rear ones have the ability to electronically match the locked differential.
Features and Packages
The Extreme Off-Road Package will include 18-inch wheels with 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler All Territory mud-terrain tires, skid plates galore, rock sliders, and washable underbody cameras. Adaptive air suspension is onboard and is said to be able to raise the Hummer up to 8 inches in the future. Also onboard is Crab Mode, and four-wheel steering that can point the rear wheels opposite to the fronts enabling a 37.1-foot turning circle. Loading items into the bed is simple thanks to GMC's famous tailgate system.
Rock crawlers will appreciate the new truck's camera system that's made up of 18 camera views, with 2 washable cameras placed underneath the truck. Hill descent control is a combination of hydraulic brakes and regenerative braking and allows the Hummer to creep down a mountainside with complete control.
A 3.0-second 0-60 time is extraordinary, and is made possible due to its launch control system. This isn't just a regular system though, it has a few party tricks. These include enhanced EV sounds from the speakers, a vibrating seat, and lowered suspension. This trick launch system is called Watts to Freedom. Without Watts to Freedom the Hummer will do 60 mph in 4.0 seconds.
While the previous H2 and H3 models were military vehicles for the road, the new Hummer differentiates from this trend. The new Hummer is a Moon rover? That's right, the new Hummer is from outer space...Sort of. The speaker grilles show the Sea of Tranquillity and the dead pedal is shaped like a space outfit footprint. The new Hummer allows stargazing with its open air roof that has removable panels. These panels, when removed, can be stored in the fronk, or front trunk.
All Edition 1 models will come in white with a black roof and bronze wheels. You'd think paying almost $113,000 would be enough to choose your own paint color.
The 2022 GMC Hummer is the first non-Cadillac vehicle to be equipped with Super Cruise and automatic lane changing as standard.
Inside the Hummer, and more specifically the infotainment system, lies a neat feature created by, wait for it, Epic Games. That's right, Fortnite creator Epic Games has provided the Hummer with its Unreal Engine graphics software for the infotainment display. Also included with this promotion is the Hummer now being the flying school bus in the actual game.
GM CEO Mary Barra has set an ambitious timeline for GMC's Hummer - 18 months, with production starting in a year. The new GMC Hummer will be produced at GM's Hamtramck plant, or 'Plant Zero'.
Trims and Pricing
Later-arriving 2023 Hummers will start at $79,995 and rise to $89,995 and $99,995 depending on trim, range, and options. The lowest 2 trims will come with a 2-motor system while $99,995 models are fitted with the 3-motor one. In addition, an SUV variant will be available for 2023 but pricing has yet to be announced.
So that's it, the new GMC Hummer EV pickup is here. It's complete with high-tech off-roading features, an abundance of power, and a removable top. Oh yeah, it will cost over $112,000 for the 2022 model year. So, with that all said...Where's the Pontiac pickup at?
