Key Points:

1. Volkswagen has revealed the 2022 Taos as the smallest VW SUV in the U.S.

2. It will compete with the Subaru Crosstrek and Jeep Compass.

3. It should start around $24,000 and arrive in dealerships mid-2021.

Volkswagen revealed the 2022 Taos subcompact SUV today, it joins its SUV siblings the Tiguan and Atlas with the same interior and exterior styling. The new Taos is 9.3 inches shorter than the Tiguan making it one of the largest subcompact SUVs available. A rugged model won't be available, unlike the Crosstrek and Compass, and no off-road oriented trim level is offered.

The Taos is powered by a tiny 1.5 L version of the Jetta's turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and generates 158 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. This power is delivered to the front or all wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission on FWD models and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic on AWD equipped ones. The reason for this low amount of horsepower is the Taos' goal - outstanding fuel economy. This is achieved thanks to not only its low power, but its modified Budack cycle technology.

The Taos has a fairly airy interior with an abundance of cargo space. To be specific, it has 28 cubic feet of cargo capacity with the rear seats up, and 66 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. As far as design, it's economical, but has an abundance of luxurious features. These include a standard 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment display, a heated leatherette steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats, a digital gauge cluster, and two-tone upholstery. 6.5-inches isn't enough? An 8.0-inch screen is optional. Other available features include an upgraded audio system, a panoramic sunroof, and leather seating.

Every Taos model is available with a driver assistance package that includes forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control with a stop & go. Adaptive front lighting and park distance control are also available.

Trims and Pricing

The 2022 Taos is expected to start around $24,000 and is confirmed to have three trim levels: S, SE, and SEL. More details will be announced this summer.
