McLaren is adamant that it will never build an SUV, but hop back to 2000 and you'll find a McLaren-engined beast that set a blistering time around the Nürburgring.

It didn't strictly have a McLaren badge, but its powerplant was something truly special.

  • So this is the dumbest video on Drive Tribe so far. That engine has NOTHING to do with a Company bearing the name McLaren. It was build, developed and produced by BMW and one of it's versions, the S70/2 was used in McLaren F1. It was however an alternative, as Gordon Murray originally planned on using a Honda engine, as McLaren at the time used Honda engines for their F1 grand prix cars. So saying that it was a sort of a "McLaren SUV" would be like calling any random bodybuilder from Austria an "Arnold Schwarzenegger".

    • Slightly aggressive? At no time in the video is it referenced as a McLaren engine, simply the S70 is the base engine that saw action in both the F1 and the X5, with the S70/3 being very close to the S70/2 engine in the F1. Hence it's the closest...
