BMW have taken the wraps off the new i8 Roadster at the LA Auto Show. Along with the Roadster, BMW also announced an updated version of the i8 Coupe but the talk of the town is this top less hybrid vehicle. However being a Roadster, it will not have the Coupe's 2+2 seating configuration.
The 2018 i8 Roadster will continue to use the 1.5 litre three cylinder engine without any power increase however it is being reported that BMW have worked towards improving the sound of this engine. The significant upgrade has take place in the electric drivetrain which has received a boost of 12hp thanks to a new battery cell configuration. The total power output now stands at 369hp. The updated high voltage battery now comes with increased capacity and range which will allow the user to drive this sportscar in complete electric mode for 18 miles.
The Roadster variant will accelerate to 60mph from standstill in 4.4 seconds when set in the hybrid mode. It is being predicted that both the coupe and roadster will return 70 mpg when driven in suitable conditions. The softop on the roadster is fully electric and it takes 16 seconds to deploy. It can be operated even when the vehicle is being driven at speeds of 31mph or below. Due to this mechanism, the Roadster weighs at 3513 pounds which is almost 132lbs more than the coupe. Efforts have been taken to keep the weight at its minimum such as by using new 20inch alloy wheels which are 2.2 pounds lighter than the options available on previous i8 models.
BMW will start the deliveries of both the new models from the spring 2018. The cost of the new models will be revealed once we get closer to the actual launch dates.
