This legendary 80's hot-hatch could be yours

Ah, the 80's - the decade that brought us the coolest, wildest and hottest hatchbacks in history.

With every car manufacturer competing to produce the fastest, boxiest model, the 80's brought us legends such as the Volkswagen Golf GTI, Peugeot 205 GTI and the Lancia Delta HF, which are still highly sought after today.

These hatchbacks were born to race, rally and rival. Which is great news for the owner, but bad news for potential buyers, as most hatches been scratched, stolen or written off completely.

Except this one...

This is a 1989 Renault 5 GT Turbo - a hotter, more driver-friendly version of the GT's from the early 80's, which were built for rallying.

Powered by a 1.4-litre turbocharged engine, the small but mighty GT Turbo delivers an impressive 115bhp and 121lb ft of torque. Plus, weighing less than a tonne, it can sprint from 0-60mph in a mere 7.5 seconds.

Not only is this car rare, fast and great fun to drive, but potential owners will be delighted to know that it's in great condition!

Delivered new to Japan but recently imported into the UK, it has just 27,000 miles on its odometer and it's just had a full service and passed its latest MOT. In fact, the auctioneers CCA’s condition report, rewarded the GT Turbo 126/135 stars... with only its ‘partial’ history file to blame for the slightly lowered score.

The hot-hatch is set to be auctioned this December and should be sold for around £15,000 and £18,000.

  • Renault used to make interesting and fun cars, them be the good old days sigh... The GT Turbo was proper quick but had interior plastics that rivaled plastic biscuit containers and suffered hot engine starting problems. £18K is more than it cost when new! So, no thanks, I prefer to hunt out a MK2 Toyota Corrolla GTI-16.
