This Pass Decided The Bathurst 12 Hour Race - And It Was A Thing Of Beauty
Matt Campbell gave Porsche its first victory in the Bathurst 12 Hour with this stunning overtake on Jake Dennis in the dying minutes of the race:
After a late safety car resulted in the race boiling down to a 20-minute sprint for the win - as Campbell rapidly closed down the leading Aston Martin of Jake Dennis with only eight minutes left to run in the race. He was clearly quicker, and he couldn’t afford to wait for a straightforward opportunity to present itself. So instead, he threw it down the inside at Forrest’s Elbow, slotting his Porsche through a very small gap.
Before that, Campbell successfully attempted a daring overtake on the Mercedes of Raffaele Marciello at Hell Corner:
Indeed, both of these overtakes have got to go down in Bathurst history as two of the finest pieces of overtaking that the track has ever seen. The race-deciding overtake could've so easily ended in both drivers crashing out, which makes it so much more incredible.
Although Campbell went on to win, the race result was briefly under review for an earlier incident where he collided with the BMW of Chaz Mostert. Thankfully no action was taken, and Campbell got to enjoy victory alongside teammates Dirk Werner and Dennis Olsen in what was the first Bathurst 12 Hours win for Porsche.
