This resto-mod 1957 C1 is a Corvette greatest hits album
A few weeks ago, auction company Barrett-Jackson threw the first of its annual auctions in Scottsdale, Arizona. As ever, the event was made up of the most exclusive cars on Earth and some rather unusual builds.
One of the most eye catching of these custom projects was a 1957 C1 Corvette that can only be described as a ‘Vette fan’s dream. That being said, I don’t think the purists will be too happy with what the car’s previous owner has done to a classic Stringray.
First of all, the twin four-barrel V8 have been replaced by a more potent LS7. That’s right, this 1950’s roadster is powered by a 7.0-litre V8 sending over 500hp to the real wheels. According to Chevy, an estimate of 505hp would be reasonable. However, the dry-sump oiling system has been slightly upgraded so that might be a little short of the real figure.
That massive lump of an engine is connected to a Tremec six-speed manual box. In fact, the standard four-speed probably wouldn’t have been strong enough to cope with the torque put out by the engine that also powers the C6 generation Corvette Z06.
Along with a modernised powertrain, the custom-built C1 has quite the contemporary chassis. It has fully independent suspension both at the front and rear and powerful 6-piston calipers on all wheels. It seems this is an American monster that may actually be able to get round a corner without fusing with a tree.
You may notice that the body is slightly different to that of an original 1957 Corvette. In order to conceal all the additional upgrades, the rear fenders have been enlarged, the side covers are recycled from a more recent 1961 ‘Vette and the door handles come straight from a C5 Corvette.
As with other restomod projects, this hot rod features all the creature comforts one would expect from a current, C8 Corvette. Incorporated into the old-school interior, occupants will find a stereo that enables Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
If you too would love to own a classic Corvette but don't quite have the cash for a fully restored beauty, there are options. In fact, Revell provides a beautiful C1 Corvette model available on Amazon.
