This 'RR 1' numberplate sold for £460,000 in a Bonhams auction

Is that too much for a numberplate?

Car auctions are a funny thing to attend. They are full of middle-to-old aged men dressed up in funky coloured suit jackets and teal coloured loafers.

There is also no sign of anyone who makes less than £100,000 year, unless there is a motoring journalist about, but that's only on press days, they wouldn't be allowed anywhere near the cars like common people otherwise.

And along with poncey cars comes expensive things. I mean, a £50 million+ Ferrari 250 GTO was sold at one of these auctions for crying out loud, and while that may not be as impressive as what I'm about to show you, this is still rather special.

Back in 2018, the numberplate 'RR 1' sold for a staggering £460k at a Bonhams auction here in the UK. Originally purchased back in 1968, this plate sold for a record-breaking price of £4,800 by HR Owen (a car dealer in Britain).

It has clearly kept its value too as it sold for almost 100 times as much 50 years later. But to be worth as much as a nicely specced Rolled Royce itself, it pretty intense, even for the richest of people.

If you fancy owning an 'RR' plate of your own, then Bonhams has one currently in motion and is expect to go for between £80,000 and £120,000. The plate in question is 'RR 3'. Not quite as regal but good enough.

Would you spend this much on a licence plate?

  • If I was a gazillionaire. I'd buy that. And a Reliant Robin to put it on. Purely for shits and giggles.

  • For the rich, they definitely live in a different world comparing to most of us.

  • Saw the title. Immediately thought: “RR 1 must mean ‘Rolls Royce 1’”. Obviously my mind thought it was the first Rolls in production. Me right now: 🤦🏻‍♂️

  • Some people have too much money.

  • Crazy isnt it that number plates can cost so much. I would prefer going for a legal random number plate, then you have a chance of the numbers spelling out a word

    • It won't stand out which I guess is why the rich want these type of plates
