TVR is under all sorts of uncertainty at the moment. The reborn British car manufacturer is currently facing a lot of financial difficulties, as well as facing delays on the renovation work for its Ebbw Vale factory due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Even though the all-new version of the Griffith might still be a long way off from production, those classic Blackpool-built TVRs are still around and still have a huge fanbase surrounding them. This TVR that The Auto Lounge Ltd up in Aberdeenshire has for sale is more than likely to be one of the most special cars Peter Wheeler's incarnation of the brand ever made, as it's the only T440R ever made!

The T440R is a homologation special, derived from the company's T400R racing cars which were built for endurance racing (including the 24 Hours of Le Mans). This genuine piece of automotive history was built alongside the 3 TVR Typhons that were produced and is in some ways very similar to the Typhons, but it does have a key difference in that it has a 4.2-litre engine as opposed to the 4.0-litre of the Typhons. With the 3 Typhons and this one-off T440R, TVR met the FIA's homologation regulations to race the T400R. Yes, it's a very cheeky way of passing the homologation rules, but pretty much everyone did it!

The construction and components of the T440R are pretty much straight from the T400R racing car. The body makes extensive use of carbon fibre (including a carbon fibre tub and a lot of exposed carbon fibre in the interior) and aluminium. It also has a flat floor, a front splitter and a rear diffuser to make the car's aerodynamics as effective as possible. The result is a drag coefficient of only 0.32! The engine's components are also pretty much straight out of the racing car, although the engine was detuned to 440 hp to make it more reliable for road use. Although, as any TVR would tell you, the words "TVR" and "reliability" don't exactly go together...

Whilst it is pretty much a racing car for the road, the T440R does have a 2+2 seating setup so if you've got kids they can come along for the ride with you! Hilariously, the tiny rear seats have the same 4-point racing harnesses as the front ones. It might be a bit of a cramped space back there, but at least you'll be pretty safe if the worst comes to the worst and you do get into an accident!

How much will this 1 of 1 actual piece of automotive history set you back? Well, The Auto Lounge Ltd. is quoting £192,990 for it. For any US buyers who might be interested, that's around $260,000! It's a very high price for a Blackpool-built TVR, but one that's probably absolutely worth paying as it's a true one-off machine that'll only become more and more valuable as the years progress. It's also a fraction of the cost of other limited-run exotics such as the Ferrari F40, McLaren F1 or any of the 'Holy Trinity' hypercars. It really might be worth taking a punt on this incredibly unique race car for the road before the price really starts skyrocketing...

  • I really hope someone or a group invests in the company to save it from an ignominious and unnecessary demise.

    • Well a huge amount of the reason why production hasn't started yet isn't really anything to do with that, it's more to do with the fact that the renovations the factory's needed have been put well behind schedule due to the pandemic. Things...
