Last week saw the motoring world descend on Las Vegas for SEMA - one of the biggest car shows in America.

SEMA always brings out the wild and whacky "yee-haw" aspects of the automotive industry, and this year was no different

But you can forget twin-turbo sportscars, pizza-making trucks and drifting slices of Americana. According to our users, the hottest thing to come out of Las Vegas’ SEMA show is officially… an engine in a box.

Specifically, Dodge’s 1,000bhp ‘Hellephant’ V8 crate engine – available now for engine swap projects.

A whopping 38.4% of DriveTribe users trumpeted the Hellephant as their favourite SEMA story, ahead of Nissan’s twin-turbo 370Z (29.7%), Toyota’s Tundra pickup complete with pizza-making robot (16%) and Ford’s Vaughn Gittin drift-ready Mustang (15.9%).

Perhaps it’s the thought that anyone can now turn their car of choice into a 1,000bhp monster that makes the Hellephant such an overnight success story. Mazda MX-5s lurk in fear of the first modder with the ambition and finances to shoehorn one into the smallest possible space…
