Three great car films you need to see
All of these car films were made by car fans for car fans....
Car feature films are in abundance in 2017 – you only have to search through your chosen streaming or television service, and you’re greeted with a multitude of choice to get your automotive fix.
Here are three of my personal favourites from recent years.
32 Hours 7 Minutes
This film chronicles the story behind the highly illegal Cannonball coast to coast races from the 1970’s and its unofficial successor The US Express which was last held in 1983 where the intrepid team of David Diem and Doug Turner sprinted from coast to coast in a modified Ferrari 308 in 32 hours and 7 minutes. Some fellow US Express drivers felt that this time was impossible and that Diem and Turner had somehow cheated their way to glory.
In October 2006 Alex Roy and co-driver David Maher together with director Cory Wells set out to prove that the record time of 32 hours 7 Minutes set over two decades before was true by attempting to beat it using Roy’s heavily modified BMW M5 E39.
3000 Miles
In 2006 the infamous Gumball 3000 made its first multi continent rally by taking 120 cars on the 3000-mile mother of all road trips starting in London with stops along the way including Budapest, Phuket and Salt Lake City amongst others before finally ending in Los Angeles.
Featuring skateboarders Tony Hawk, Bam Margera and Mike Vallely, BMX rider Mike Escamilla and the late Jackass Ryan Dunn. The film follows their adventures around the world in eight days as they encounter many speeding tickets, multiple breakdowns and the trashing of Margera’s Lamborghini Gallardo on an airport runway.
Also worth watching is the additional scene in the end credits where revenge is taken for an unsavoury incident that took place on the rally.
Apex: The Story of the Hypercar
This film documents the new class of supercars and the people that are responsible for creating them. Directed by J.F. Musial and Josh Vietze with writer Mike Spinelli - it follows the journey of the current crop of Hypercars from research and development to realisation.
There is even an appearance from hypercar innovator Christian von Koenigsegg himself as he attempts to fulfil his personal quest to build a ‘Mega’ car. The film presents an in-depth look at the top-secret development facilities at Ferrari, Porsche, McLaren and Pagani in addition to Koenigsegg and what it takes to produce one of the very fastest hypercars.
