Three old very unwise men: What made old Top Gear so special?
Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond are likely the most famous gearheads ever. What made their show so special?
If you ask almost anyone on this platform, what they think of New Top Gear, they would say it's 'rubbish'. Okay, that's unfair, this platform is made by the previous presenters of Top Gear, the famous three unwise men, Clarkson, Hammond and May.
But putting aside these childish arguments, trying to hold on to the past, we see a program that is really good, but not as good as the old one with those three. Why isn't it so good? And how can they do better?
Truly, what made it so special?
This is an easy one to answer. The connection between the hosts, and their personalities. Notice something about the new top gear, that all the hosts seem like they don't know each other, and that their relationship is scripted? Yeah, you're probably not wrong about that.
Hammond, Clarkson and May have been on Top Gear together for over 20 years, and in that time, they form pretty rare connections. They know everything about each other, and they love to hate each other. They have a connection that I am willing to say has never been on any other show among their presenters. And the connections don't stop there.
These presenters also have a special connection to their audience. Back when crowds were a thing, Top Gear used to be recorded in front of a live studio audience. This gave the presenters the opportunity to interact with the audience, which in Clarkson's case meant insulting them! But still, people loved them for that. And to add that to their personalities, the audience loves Clarkson's confidence and humor, May's mental age of a 150, and Hammond's childish nature. It is what makes them special. And that's made the show special as well.
