The official land-speed record (measured over one mile) is 763.035 mph (Mach 1.020), set by Andy Green (UK) on 15 October 1997 in the Black Rock Desert, Nevada, USA. Thrust SSC is the first car to break the sound barrier, The car is powered by two Rolls-Royce Spey 202 jet engines which generate 222 kN (50,000 lb) of thrust. Will Andy Green be the first man to achieve over 1000 mph on land in the new Bloodhound SSC?
