Tom Hanks' airstream trailer is going up for auction
It's been on the set of Forrest Gump and Sleepless In Seattle, amongst others!
The Airstream trailer is a design classic. Those gorgeous polished aluminium homes away from home have become global icons since they first appeared on the market in the mid-1930s. Owning one of these trailers is a big statement of style and status and it's no wonder why people absolutely clamour for them! This particular Airstream from 1992 is up for sale with Bonhams and it's a little bit different from the usual Airstreams you'd see coming through the auction houses, as this one used to be owned by Tom Hanks!
Hanks bought this trailer in 1993 and it's been his on-set residence on every American production he's done from Sleepless In Seattle later that same year to The Circle in 2017. "I got it in the days when movies moved slower," said the Hollywood legend in an interview with Bonhams' Magazine. "I had spent too much time in regular trailers with ugly décor and horribly uncomfortable furniture, so I decided to buy a brand-new Airstream shell with an interior made to my own request. I didn't want anything built-in, other than the kitchen and bathroom, so it had only a desk and cupboard in the back, a futon platform on the floor, and room for a small table and chairs. I wanted a regular sofa, too, so I had one made with removable legs so it would get through the door."
Its incredible heritage as a film star's home away from home is shown through a bunch of replica clapperboards tied to 18 different US film sets the trailer visited. There's also a whole load of stickers on the windows related to the various different films and places Hanks has worked on and been to over his career. As an added bonus for whoever gets to own this trailer, Hanks himself has autographed one of the air conditioners!
Not only was the Airstream Hanks' own personal place of rest and relaxation, but he would also entertain friends and colleagues in there once the day's filming had finished. Clearly, Hanks' colleagues liked his bespoke living quarters; he claims that "everyone who visited mine went away wanting one." High praise indeed!
The trailer will be going up for auction on 13 August 2021 at the Quail Lodge & Golf Club in Carmel-By-The-Sea, California. It's estimated to go for between $150,000-$250,000 (£110,000-£180,000) and it'll be sold without a reserve. If you've been after a cozy, comfortable and stylish way to travel that's also got a unique Hollywood provenance attached to it (or, alternatively, you're a massive Tom Hanks fan with money to burn!), this early 90s Airstream is the perfect buy.
