Tom Hanks is selling his Toyota Land Cruiser and his Airstream trailer
Both will be auctioned through Bonhams during the upcoming Monterey Car Week
Tom Hanks is selling his 1980 Toyota Land Cruiser as well as his 1993 Airstream Limited Excella trailer at the upcoming Bonhams Quail Lodge Auction on August 13. Both vehicles (well, yes, the Airstream isn’t a vehicle) have been customized per Tom’s request but, as you’d expect, there’s nothing too excessive going on.
The FJ40 Land Cruiser is painted in Rustic Green with a white roof, and it was fitted with new Old Man Emu Shocks and chrome wheels with Toyo Open Country 31 x 10.50 R 15LT tires. It also has upgraded brakes and power steering, a roof rack and a rear-mounted spare wheel.
Inside you’ll find a brand new (figure of speech) Sony cassette stereo with extra speakers, a new air conditioning system and new seats: at the front, Tom installed power-operated Porsche high-back seats finished in black, while at the rear, the Toyota is equipped with center-facing folding seats in the rear. The original grey leatherette seats are also included in the sale.
The engine was replaced with a 2000 model year GM L35 4.3 L Vortec V6, delivering 180 hp and mated to a GM-sourced five-speed manual transmission. According to Bonhams, the Land Cruiser will fetch $75,000 and $125,000.
The 1993 Airstream Limited Excella was used by the actor on movie sets between 1993 and 2017 and Bonhams believe it’s actually more valuable than the Toyota, and it might end up selling for $150,000-$250,000.
"I got it in the days when movies moved slower," Hanks told Bonhams. "I had spent too much time in regular trailers with ugly decor and horribly uncomfortable furniture, so I decided to buy a brand-new Airstream shell with an interior made to my own request."
Even the trailer is discreet and restrained, as you'd expect from a Hollywood star who apparently used the same trailer for 20-odd years.
