Luxury SUVs have been the hot topic in motoring recently but which one is the best? With companies like Aston Martin and Lamborghini making SUVs, there is no car company that is not having a shot at the SUV market. Here are some of the top luxury SUVs of 2019. As always let me know if I have missed anything in the comments section!

10. Volkswagen Touareg

This SUV clearly demonstrates what VW does best. Astounding quality. The Touareg has all the ingredients to make it a successful SUV but it lacks a certain panache to be an SUV that evokes a sense of stylishness or complete luxury. The timeless design is what persuades people to buy this car as it has an appeal which mitigates that of the customers who want to have an SUV without burning a hole in their wallet.

A roomy interior coupled with state of the art technology is where this VW comes into it's own as it is simply the best at being a normal SUV. For a car that costs £50,000, performance is really good but the steering can be a little bit unresponsive at times.

9. BMW X5

The 4th generation of the Munich based firms luxury 4x4 shows a step up in its intention which is quite simply, to be the best. In 1999, when the X5 was first released, it was an international success as it promoted sporty driving as well as off road capability however did not have a dynamic feel but is this new X5 just as good?

The new X5 has a rather sleek appearance and has a seating position which is reminiscent of a saloon. The X5 has amazing handling as well as good body control and well balanced grip levels which is the USP for this car, making it much more desirable than some of it's larger rivals.

8. Mercedes Benz G-Class

The G class- a car desired by the masses but only bought by a few. The swag factor that G class brings to the roads is unlike any car you will ever drive. Costing in excess of £100,000, the G class is without a doubt, one of the most expensive cars on this list but it's luxurious appeal and rather boxy appearance is what wins the heart of any G class enthusiast.

This latest model has kept true to the boxy look and the ridiculously high ground clearance, the character defining features of one of the worlds most sought after SUVs. The G class comes in a diesel option and the ludicrous 577bhp AMG model. The handling is pretty tidy for an SUV apart from a limited turning circle. Boot space is also a winning factor with which the G class wins over its rivals.

7. Range Rover Velar

This car rather significant due to it's futuristic design which looks to come out straight from a concept car. The interior that is most likely the best in it's field combines both utter luxury and rich technology along with an amazing infotainment system which is shared from some Jaguar models.

The power, ride and handling is as refined as any car can be however the 4 cylinder version has very poor acceleration compared to the the six cylinder model. The sweeping lights make the Velar an object of beauty, pushing forward the reputation of Range Rover's eloquent design features.

6. Audi Q7

The Q7 emanates a feeling of accomplishment as it presents itself as a well polished and all round package. With so much space inside and with a high quality interior, the Q7 shows that Audi can have cars that are fast like the R8 but still have the means to communicate luxury and refinement through their SUV range with both the Q7 and the Q8.

The Q7 however feels bland to drive, while it does manage to grip well and handle the corners well, the Q7 lacks the drama factor that its rivals might bring and feels rather uninviting to drive. It is highly efficient which is a huge improvement over the last model but is averagely priced so it doesn't really stand out from the market but people still manage to buy it year and year over. It's little wonder that the big Audi does so well.

5. Porsche Cayenne

Opinions on the Cayenne vary from it being the car that saved Porsche to being utterly hideous to look at. The latest Cayenne however, is a bit of a let down as it lacks the edge to be the proper drivers car it once was. Porsche being the company it is, they always make cracking sports cars. Sharing some of the technology and components with its little sibling, the Macan, the Cayenne is in somewhat of a lull as it really isn't the car it used to be but is still decent enough to bear a Porsche badge.

Despite all this, the interior is exquisite and is probably one of the best in its class. The engines are also something to win over petrolheads as the line up may not include a diesel engine but instead a V6 turbo, V8 turbo and a plug-in hybrid.

4. Tesla Model X

Tesla is arguably one of the most important motoring companies of recent years as they have continuously pumped out cars that not only push the limits of cutting edge technology but also promote the use of electric vehicles. The cool reputation of Tesla has led to its success as the sales of Tesla have increased every year. The Model X is he most poignant as it is Tesla's first and maybe last venture into the SUV market.

Being the only EV on the list, the Model X upholds the very best there is about EVs. The gull-wing doors add to the Darth Vader aesthetic. The interior quality is somewhat questionable but the acceleration along with the torque is absolutely mesmerising.

3. Volvo XC90

The XC90 has been one of the best selling SUVs in the UK due to it's spaciousness and its impeccable driving experience. One model that stands out is the 401bhp plug in hybrid as it features Volvo's best styling which has been common in recent years. The XC90 is another car that sits in the middle of the luxury car price spectrum which makes it a fairly average cat to buy.

This car is particularly popular with families as they are usually looking for relaxation as well as convenient practicality. The fact is that with the latest edition of their hot SUV, Volvo is a company that is making leaps in progress and the XC90 still maintains its reputation on being the most sensible choice out of its rivals.

2. Bentley Bentayga

The Bentayga. A car that has caused some disagreements in the past but once you look at the advantages of this £150k+ car, your opinion on it may change. Coming with an option that allows you to have animal fur as the carpets, the Bentayga screams luxury like nothing else in the SUV market. If you want a car that gives you utter comfort with the added bonus of feeling like royalty, then the Bentayga may be the motor for you.

With design elements from the EXP 10 Speed 6 Concept and ground clearance to give you an experience that some manufacturers can dream of, Bentley may have found their place in the SUV market. This is definitely a car for the elite and the stupidly rich. I would quite like one though...

1. Range Rover Sport

The Sport. Put by Jeremy Clarkson as the equivalent of Marks & Spencer's Underwear although may I point out that other underwear is available. The epitome of quality and luxury has been present in the Sport since it was created. With the added bonus of amazing off road abilities, the Sport stays true to the SUV nature but is a completely different car on tarmac compared to other terrains.

It may not be as spacious as its bigger siblings or as nimble in the bends but it brings such a rich and refined cabin which is second to none. The handling and performance is particularly good on the SVR model as the roaring V8 brings a whole new meaning to speed. Despite its high price tag, the Sport may be all the SUV you will ever need.

  • The U.S. has gone completely stupid for SUV’s. Personally, I find SUV’s repugnant. It started when people wanted a more commanding view of the road. Now that nearly everyone owns one the visual advantage is not there. Now all they do is block the view of those of us who still prefer to drive cars. Which one is the best? Who cares? They’re all overpriced, over-sized, rolling icons of automotive bloat.

    • It's not just the USA that's gone SUV mad, they sell in huge numbers all over the world.

    • I didn’t say JUST the USA but it is the only market I can talk about. Cheers!

  • I’m glad the didn’t put the “urus” at the or near the top because it’s the worst car I’ve seen lambo release.

    • Agreed. Looks stupid. Is stupid. I’m more of a Porsche guy, but Lamborghini needs to stick to sports cars.

    • What’s wrong with it?

You know aside from lamborghini not being supposed to make SUVs in general.

  • The United States have lifted trucks with twin wheels and balls dangling off it throwing smoke to measure the dick size of their rwspective owners. We have "Best SUV" lists. It's a brilliant warning sign really.

  • Bentley below rover and porsche below tesla?

    • It’s quite a close list 😬

    • Because when it comes to GT cars, Bentley is fantastic, but the Range Rover is a better SUV. It can off-road better, looks infinitely better and can tow more. Speed shouldn’t be a factor in comparing SUVs, that’s not really what they are built...

  • In my neck of the woods everyone and their uncle has a Range Rover. I’d have a Range Rover Autobiography SV and blend in with style and luxury as well as off-road performance.
