Top 10 Funniest Tweet Awards - Belgian Grand Prix 2020

This week: numb legs, tyre issues, water in the cockpit, bottoms up to Ferrari's strategy, deja vu and Alfa Romeo beats Ferrari!

8w ago

This weekend will go down in history for one that Ferrari fans will want to forget. Neither car made it into Q3 yesterday and finished the race where they started in P13 and 14, albeit with the drivers swapped over.

Everything went wrong for them this weekend. They had no speed, no strategy and unfortunately looked like they had no clue. A far cry from the world champions that they had been.

Elsewhere, Mercedes were channelling their inner Duran Duran, being hungry like the Wolff for their first win at Spa since 2017. It seemed to work as Mercedes secured a 1-2 in both qualifying and the race, with Lewis Hamilton looking untouchable, taking both pole and the win to extend his lead in the Drivers' Championship to 47 points.

Elsewhere, Renault grabbed their best result of the season so far, with Ricciardo and Ocon taking 4th and 5th respectively.

Sainz's McLaren failed to start the race, due to exhaust issues that were identified on the way to the pitlane, but Norris grabbed a haul of points, finishing in 7th.

The race wasn't packed full of thrills and spills, but it did have its moments. But it did mean that there were a steady stream of funny tweets in my Twitter timeline, especially about Ferrari's failings.

Having deliberated while having a well deserved cup of tea, I couldn't let this week slide without having a special Ferrari edition, they were THAT bad this week. So brace yourselves for TWO sets of Funniest Tweet Awards.

Without further ado, here are the Top 10 Funniest Tweet Awards for the Belgian Grand Prix:

10th place

@FvB2309 with live onboard footage with Bottas in the last laps of the race as he said he had got a numb left leg from the brakes.

9th place

@Blueshay3 with live footage as the Ferrari powered Alfa Romeo driven by Kimi passed his old teammate Vettel in the Ferrari factory car.

8th place

@pgillett2017 with behind-the-scenes footage from the Alfa Romeo motorhome when Kimi realises he was this highest placing Ferrari-powered car (OK, he was only 12th, but he still beat Vettel and Leclerc)

7th place

@traceyp_03 with the question on everyone's lips, when the talk over Mercedes' and Verstappen's team radio moved to tyres, degredation and whether they would last until the chequered flag. Looking at the timing board, the top three runners appeared to take their feet off the accelerator. Although the gaps between them remained steady, if only Ricciardo could have had a couple more laps he might have been able to 'have a go' on Max Verstappen for the final podium place. However, he didn't, and it wasn't to be ... this week at least.

6th place

@ClanAhtna with footage from the McLaren motorhome as Carlos Sainz sits and watches today's race ... especially Ferrari's performance.

5th place

@mrdemmendaal with a view of Charles Leclerc's Ferrari along the Kemmel straight

4th place

@tarasdemerson with live onboard footage from Bottas's car during a conversation on team radio where he asks if it's time to push, and he's told the plan is not to push each other today.

3rd place

@timwagner66 with unseen footage as Vettel is advised of Ferrari's strategy for today's race.

2nd place

@stargateoracle with footage from Ricciardo's Renault at the start of the race as he looks to chase his former Red Bull teammate.

1st place

This week's winner is @MinxyD14 with live footage from Kimi's car as he advised the Alfa pitwall he had water on his right foot. Was it a leaky water bottle, hydraulic fluid ... or something else??

And that's this week's Top 10 Funniest Tweet Awards.

As always, let me know which one(S) is/are your favourites in the comments below.

Keep your eyes peeled for a Ferrari special edition, uploading soon.

  • gotta give McLaren credit for benching Sainz with a DNS, trying to help him get acquainted with Ferrari's pace for next year. Very thoughtful of them.

  • Sainz's face when he saw how badly Ferrari were doing was priceless. Feel sorry for him for next year already.

    • I think Ferrari's performance next weekend at Monza will be at least as bad, if not, worse.

I really wouldn't like to be in Mattia Binottos shoes right now.

    • I agree, don't see them doing well there at all. Renault might mix things up quite nicely though.

Definitely wouldn't want to be Binotto right now. They need a miracle if they want to win anything before 2022.
