Top 10 Funniest Tweet Awards - Italian Grand Prix 2020

This week: flying pigs, brake issues, Mercedes mistake, recovery truck troubles & a restart that doesn't see the usual suspects on the podium!!

3w ago

At the beginning of the weekend, did anyone foresee what would happen during today's race?

Well, the fact that Ferrari were likely to have a stinker of a race was a foregone conclusion, but even so a double DNF at their home race!!!

But no one would have predicted that a race that started with Hamilton flying off into the distance would eventually after two safety cars see an Alpha Tauri, McLaren and a Racing Point on the podium.

To say it was an exciting race would be an understatement. Well OK it only really got exciting after the first safety car, but still it will certainly go down in the history books as one of the more exciting ones in the Mercedes-dominant era.

My Twitter timeline was a constant stream of tweets, and I have finally whittled nearly 200 entries down to a mere 10. I did need a couple of mugs of tea to settle my nerves following the race and give me the energy to get through the tweets.

So, without further ado, here are the Top 10 Funniest Tweet Awards fot the 2020 Italian Grand Prix:

10th place

@Jontys_Corner with F1 fan reactions when we realise that following the red flag, the race will restart not behind the safety car, but a full standing restart. When was the last time that happened? (I have no idea, if you know please let me know in the comments, thanks)

9th place

@micky_h76 with a suggestion for what Ferrari should really do with this season's car. Is this possibly the worst season Ferrari have ever had? If not, where would you rate it?

8th place

@RJoseRazoJr with live footage from the Stewards' room as they look for more incidents to investigate. They were certainly kept very busy this afternoon.

7th place

@MichaelGierula with proof that pigs were indeed flying over Monza this afternoon, as two Italian cars led the race following the restart ... just not the two Italian cars you would expect, but rather an Alpha Tauri and an Alfa Romeo.

6th place

@astweetedbyRP echoing the sentiments of all F1 fans, especially those who may have dozed off during the early stages of the race.

5th place

@timwagner66 with onboard footage from Hamilton's car at the start of the race as he spots that Sainz and Norris are the cars in P2 and P3, after Bottas and Verstappen chose reverse gear as the lights went out and slipped down the order.

4th place

@KellieHitch29 with unseen footage of the crane trying to lift Leclerc's stricken Ferrari from the gravel trap so it could be transported back to the pitlane.

3rd place

@stargateoracle with footage of F1 fans as they realise that an Italian team actually won the Italian Grand Prix.

2nd place

@TarasDemerson with the real reason that Bottas went backwards as the lights went out.

1st place

@_DavidBroad_ with unseen footage of Vettel as his brakes failed and he smashed through the run-ff chicane, sending polystyrene flying.

And that concludes this week's Funniest Tweet Awards. I did have a really difficult job this week choosing just 10. If you want to see all of the ones in the list, have a look on my Twitter feed (@Pitlane_Girl), they're all there.

Which one(s) are your favourite? Let me know in the comments.

Until next week, take care.

  • Who would have seen that coming?

Bottas and Verstappen going backwards was a massive surprise.

Lewis slowly clearing off wasn’t. I thought he’d get so far in front he’d have a free pit stop.

The safety cars bringing them all back together was Lewis’s undoing, but coming out the pits 20 seconds adrift and nearly catching his team mate!!!

    What a drive!

Gasly and Sainz, hats off to them, they deserve the accolades today. But that really was a driver of the day performance by Lewis.

Stroll going off while leading didn’t surprise me at all. I think he gets a rush of blood to the head.

It hasn’t affected the outcome of the championship, but it added thrills, spills, some racing and a new podium and winner.

    Overall a brilliant race.

I’ve avoided mentioning the red cars. What must be going through the drivers minds? How soul destroying for them. How embarrassing for the team.

Abysmal is the best I can manage.
