Top 20 most beautiful German cars of all time
Can you guess the number 1?
When I think of German cars, the first thing that comes to mind is build quality and efficiency. Over many years German manufacturers have been world renowned for building trustworthy and 'bombproof' cars that stand the test of time and then some.
It's not uncommon to find a Mercedes, BMW or Audi with more than 200,000 miles on the clock where it looks and feels brand new.
When you think of countries that manufacture the most beautiful cars in the world, your mind will jump to Italy or Britain. However, when you look at the most beautiful cars produced by a single country, Germany actually ranks pretty high, and I've made this top 20 list to prove that.
This list is pretty subjective, and you might not see your favourite German cars on here, but there are actually quite a lot to choose from!
Here are, what I think, are the top 20 most beautiful German cars of all time.
20) VW Karmann Ghia
A few VW fans might be disappointed with this list as this is the only representative of the brand. However, anyone who does wish there to be more VWs, please let me know which one I should be replacing, as I can't see it.
19) Mercedes W123 estate
The most beautiful estate car ever made. Elegant lines and a derrière to die for.
18) BMW 635 CSI
The 6-series has an angular style that screams 80s in the best possible way.
17) Audi Quattro
Another 80s hero. There's something about this car that just wants to be driven.
16) Audi R8
The Audi R8 is a modern masterpiece in design. It will definitely be one for the ages. In 50 years time, this will be in all the auction houses going for lottery money. Unless we are in a dystopian future where all forms of fuel other than Hydrogen is banned.
15) Porsche Carrera GT
It was a close match between the Carrera GT and the 918 to get a place on this list, but the Carrera just edges it for being first. I actually think it is still better looking from pretty much every angle, but it is very close.
14) Mercedes SLS Black series
Even in yellow it is gorgeous. With a nod to the Gullwing, this will also be one for the auction house future.
13) BMW 3.0 CS
An iconic design, especially in Batmobile CSL form as seen below with the homage.
12) BMW M1
A rarity on the road, but a famous race car with pedigree in spades.
11) Porsche 959
At the time, this was the fastest street-legal production car at 195 mph. Take the performance away and you still have a stunning car.
10) Mercedes SLR
The beautiful design is more than matched by the engine note. The 5.5 litre engine sounds like Thor gargling nails.
9) BMW 2002
With a lot of similarities of the 3.0 CS, the 2002 squeezes it into a perfectly proportioned packaged, making it one of the coolest cars to own on the road today.
8) Porsche 911
I have kept the whole 911 range to the one place on the list. I could have included a few, but no-one wants to see 20 forms of the 911 now do we?
I have gone for one of the simplest versions of the 911, and in particular, the '66 Irish Green 911 belonging to Magnus Walker.
I encourage you all to join Magnus' tribe through this link and fall in love with Porsche as much as him: drivetribe.com/u/_N4UBQT_Q_6-uqBERJToow?iid=EOh0vpwZSsKoUACi-cbh8w
You can hear Magnus talking about the Irish green '66 911 in the video below. Warning, it will make you want things you probably can't afford.
7) Mercedes CLK GTR
This was firmly placed on my bedroom wall, replacing a Christina Aguilera poster (I had a phase).
6) BMW Z8
As a car it was flawed, but as a design it utterly beautiful. Alpina and a few other modding companies had a go at turning the Z8 into the car it deserved to be, but it will always remain a disappointment.
5) Mercedes 230 SL
There are very few cars in history that you can look cooler in than this. Even a comb-over or baseball cap won't stop people thinking you are as cool as they come.
4) Porsche 356 Speedster
I wasn't always a fan of the 356 growing up, but there has been a change in opinion in recent years which has propelled it toward the top of my most wanted list. I think it is most likely due to Petrolicious and their stunning videos.
You can see their video on a Porsche 356A Speedster below:
3) BMW 507
Elvis had one... nuff said
2) BMW 328 Roadster
One of the first cars to sport the famous BMW grill, the 328 could easily be placed in a list of the most beautiful Italian cars ever and no-one would bat an eyelid. It also had the mad but brilliant homage made recently, which I'm a little bit in love with.
1) Mercedes 300SL Gullwing
The number one most beautiful car of all time had to go to the Mercedes 300SL Gullwing. A gorgeous car from every angle. If you are lucky to see one of these in the flesh, you will never forget it.
There are a lot of people who would argue that this is the most beautiful car of all time, but that's an argument for another day.
Are there any German cars that you think should have made the list?
