Top 3 racing animes Young Petrolheads should watch.
"Omega Husky" is a freelance writer who writes articles in his spare time and works making automotive reviews, writing about unusual cars, playing videogames... Oh is he a dog behind the screen? probably... why you don`t scratch my ears and find out? ^_^
When it comes to entertainment for Petrolheads I know that nothing beats watching Motorsports on Paid Cable TV with a beer, peanuts alongside a cigarette laying down in the sofa all relaxed during the weekend ¿But what happens when you spot a Young Petrolhead that has just started on the automotive world and can`t understand what`s going on in your TV screen? Well my answer is pretty simple. And it comes from the land of the rising sun (And also it`s cartoon as well) Anime.
The story of Initial D is set in late 1990 on the Prefecture of Gunma, this anime focuses on the world of illegal Japanese Street racing where all of the action concentrates at the Mountain passes with the drifting style being emphasized in particular.
The main plot for the anime? Fujiwara Takumi an eighteen year old who helps his father run a Tofu store by making deliveries every morning to a hotel on Akina with his father's Toyota 86 Sprinter Trueno (GT-Apex) gets introduced into the world of Touge Racing by his friends. during the development of the series the unusual Skill of Fujiwara is unveiled after his first victory facing an RX-7 on the downhill of Akina. for he had been driving 5 years before even earning his driver`s license, as a result his driver skills were polished on the mountain pass of his hometown.
I have clear that this Anime doesn`t seem to have much story behind it but do not be fooled, Keichii Tsuchiya himself supervised the edition of the series, Initial D Unlike Speed racer doesn`t have completely Impossible maneuvers, I can say that this Anime is certainly entertaining for young petrolheads and of course... They maybe will learn a thing or two about the secrets of racing as they`re on it. (And as soon they get their license buy a beaten up jdm shitbox)
Jokes aside about buying beaten up Japanese Shitboxes, I liked this Anime a lot after seeing the Protagonist evolving into a fine driver defeating oponents left & right while Music that goes accordingly with each moment of the series blasts, There`s the Manga, There`s the Battle Stages & Legend movies including the third stage movie and the unholy live action movie which shall never be spoken of again, this is a series I would recommend watching for sure if you like Touge.
Wangan Midnight is another street racing anime that focuses on the street racing that happened back in the 90s era on the famous Wangan that circles around the city of Tokyo, this Anime is also based around one of the most popular legends of the automotive world on the street racing scene. The Ghosts of the Asphalt known as the Mid-Night club.
Wangan Midnight is quite the opposite of Initial D on many aspects, As for the beginning of the story Asakura Akio our main character is a average street racer on the wangan, One day he gets left in the dust by the Emperor of the Wangan the Porsche 911 "Blackbird" while he was driving around with Ma alongside some girls. One day while he looks for a new car to drive he finds an old S30Z laying discarded and wrecked atop of a pile of junk on the junkyard, Akio had always wished to own one of these and went on to look for the car`s reg, Upon looking it up he finds the previous owner has his same full name, Taking this as a message he seals his fate as the driver of the Devil Z bringing it back to life, the formerly fastest car around the Wangan which killed his original driver and many of it`s other owners is back on the Wangan for the sole objective of beating the Blackbird.
When it comes to talk about Wangan midnight I do see Asakura`s Obession with the haunted devil Z even if it tries to kill him more than twice on the Anime but still you can feel his passion alongside the other characters and it`s not all happyness and roses. Wangan Midnight also shows how far and to what extremes the racers who see the devil Z are willing to go just to beat him, going hard on him and then give up loosing everything.
You also don`t get bullshit parts of plot like on the other racing animes, everything can happen on the Wangan racing at more than 170mph while chasing after the Devil Z
Since there`s Petrolheads that don`t fully like the idea of Street racing Animes there`s other ones I can mention like Capeta, which takes place on the world of Circuit racing,Karting, Formula 3... There`s pretty much anything on this anime (Which is also a Manga like the other ones) including multiple references to Initial D & the TV program Best Motoring International as well as formula 1, But that`s not everything, Capeta also includes many Karting & Racing references that don`t only help to deepen the plot and are also factual when it comes to speak about the many factors of circuit racing, tire usage, Racing lines, Slipstream... and general comentary about racing.
The plot for the anime is that during the paving work of a Go-kart racing track Taira Shigei the father of the still young Capeta sees a boy racing at the adjacent racetrack, realizing his son has excitement for the motorsport he asks the circuit steward if he can take home some old discarded parts of the circuit`s trash pile, Taking these to his workplace he eventually builts a Go-kart with the junk with his boss providing a 4 stroke generator engine to power up the Go-kart. Capeta eventually evolves after managing to keep up with the track`s hotshot on a gokart built out of junk towards the higher levels of 4 wheel racing.
I haven`t watched this racing anime due to many time restraints but I can tell you that this anime could be actually good for young petrolheads who want to get a little taste about how circuit racing is like, Altough Wangan midnight & Initial D are more of my taste by the Mature feel to it including the illegal factor of parts of the car culture I can say that this Anime is definitively on my Bucket List.
Although I could have mentioned other sweet tasting animes like "Let`s & Go" go made for young children (Basically 4WD toy car racing ) I know that ignoring jewels like Redline is a capital sin for those who both like cars and anime, just so you have a idea Redline is a Anime film that is COMPLETELY animated by hand whose development took more than 5 years, Altough I have clear that Redline is not certainly for the young kids of the house but rather oriented towards more mature audiences, However you can see many references to american Chopper culture, Galactic stuff, Cyborgs & rude Aliens... What`s not to like if we add a Trans-Am in the mix racing against awkardly shaped speeder vehicles at easily 300Mph in a rule-less race on a desert planet?
The main plot for the Movie is that in the planet Dorothy our protagonist "Sweet" JP races in the Yellowline race , the galaxy's famous final elimination race in which even using weapons against your oponents is allowed, wheover wins it will take the last spot to enter on the Redline. The high level version of the ultimate race, However After having his car rigged to fail by Joshua "Frisbee" JP loses the Yellowline suffering a espectacular accident on the process.
While on the Hospital JP which is still recovering from the explosion on a hospital on the Dorothy planet hospital Frisbee tells him he can use the money he got from his bondsman to repair the Trans-am and even more things but JP refuses at first to keep on racing. However after a crowd of reporters storms the hospital JP learns that after some of the remaining racers for the redline had quit their spots after being threathened by Roboworld`s dictator he has earned a spot on the Redline, and without hesitation he takes the oportunity towards racing the ultimate race.
what I have to say about Redline ... it's not for young children, but I can say it's like an LSD trip on steroids because you don't know what's going on during the movie, you go from a race on a desert planet with a lot of futuristic speeders racing a Trans-Am to a world full of cyborgs bombing racing cars desesperately as in a warzone, You won`t get to make sense of the movie, a hyperactive radio man who comments the Redline, a racer who has merged with his own racing machine, Extremely long hair and references to American culture from the 1950s paired with Cars that transform into weirdly sugestive robots with perverted designs? I have clear that Redline is one of those Animes that altough they cause you a lot of confussion you can quite enjoy them on a hot summer afternoon if you throw conmon sense away.
OMEGA OUT! See you on the next blogpost!
