All indications are that 2020 will be the era of electric car years.

In the beginning, only a few small and slightly strange cars were electric. Then came the Tesla Model S and accelerated electric cars for families, too. And this past year, electric SUVs have entered the market fully.

Now there are also many more of the traditional car manufacturers that have thrown themselves on the electric car wave - with "electric car 2.0". By that we mean electric cars that are built to run on electricity right from the start. That will say that they have their own platform - and are not just based on a traditional combustion engine model.

Of the approximately 30 new cars expected on the market in 2020, we have selected 5 that we believe are the most relevant.

VW ID.3

This you will see many of on the roads in the years to come.

ID.3 has rear-wheel drive. But there also comes an SUV with four-wheel drive: ID.4.

Porsche Taycan

Taycan will provide the Porsche Year in 2020.

Now Porsche will join the electric car wave. Of course, they do things their own way, and deliver driving characteristics that most live up to the expectations one has for this brand.

The range is not the best - and Porsche is fine with that. Here the focus is on performance, premium feeling and driving pleasure.

Polestar 2

Polestar 2 becomes the first volume model for Volvo's sister brand.

Volvo's premium brand, Polestar, opened its very first store in Oslo. Polestar 2 will be the first volume model - and expectations are high. Here, we focus on using Volvo's dealer and service network.

Polestar 2 comes with Android-based infotainment system. That means you get Google Maps, for example, and everything else you are used to from your smartphone.

Ford Mustang Mach-e

The Ford Mustang Mach-e will be the first Ford electric car to be built on its own platform.

Electric Focus was by no means a success for Ford. But now that they are ready with their first electric car developed from scratch, the story seems to be a completely different one. Mustang Mach-e strikes the table with favorable price, good range and the possibility of four-wheel drive.

In the beginning you get up to 337 hp. But in 2021, a GT Performance edition comes with around 450 hp.

Skoda Vision iV

The car in the picture is the concept edition, with it a coupe-like roofline.

It shares a platform with ID.3 - but is therefore considerably larger, and comes with four-wheel drive.

  • These five cars are certainly important to their manufacturers. VW in particular has a lot riding on becoming a mass producer of EV’s. I’d say the Tesla Model Y is just as likely to sell in volume in 2020 as any of these vehicles and has their supercharger network, self-driving tech and battery production capacity as a hedge against the competition. What’s your criteria for relevance?

  • If you combine any two of those cars, (maybe not the ford) does anyone think they’ll sell as many models as the 2020 model Y that isn’t on this list? Never mind, it’s not important.

    • I was tempted to say hell yes they will since the model Y will come out on Tesla's unpredictable but always late schedule. But after re-inspecting the list you may be right. The ID3 and Skoda won't be coming to the states. The Taycan got that...

  • I would bet that the Porsche is the only one anyone can actually take delivery of in 2020. The rest will be just like all of the other EVs announced that are supposedly just around the corner and will disrupt the industry and kill Tesla etc.

  • I'd say the Honda E as well. It'll be the first Electric-only car from Honda aimed at the mass market. About time Honda joins the game. We will see if they can keep up with the likes of the Leaf, Bolt, etc.

    • Eeeerrrr.. it costs as much as a Model 3 and it wont even reach half of the Model 3s range (yes, I am speaking of the SR+) it charges near twice as slow and it's tiny (which for many people is great, but then, why would you spend some serious...

  • What about the 2020 Rivian R1T Electric Truck? Shouldn't that be on this list? Aren't they also releasing an SUV model too?
