Top Gear America is getting a reboot
Will it work this time?
The original attempt at making a version of Top Gear for American audiences was a bit of a weird one. The choice of presenters was an odd combination (Tanner Foust, Adam Ferrara and Rutledge Wood). Stories have also since surfaced about how staged the 'challenges' were and, in some cases, how difficult Tanner Foust was to work with, one of which can be seen in the video linked below:
This original run somehow managed to last 6 years following its debut in 2010, fulfilling its contractual run on the History Channel in June 2016. It was given another shot in 2017 by BBC America, this time presented by William Fichtner, Tom Ford and Anton Brown. This somehow fared even worse, only managing one 8 episode season before being left out to dry. Now it seems like an American Top Gear is being given a third go!
This time round, the presenters are very different again. Actor Andrew Collins, stuntman Dax Shepherd, comedian Rob Corddry and motoring journalist Jethro Bovingdon will be taking up their positions in the presenting team. The presence of a known motoring journalist should add a lot of legitimacy to the show that the original 2010 version decidedly lacked, with Shepherd providing the legitimate driving background that Tanner Foust should have brought to the 2010 series. Andrew Collins and Rob Corddry are also well known to be car enthusiasts, something that should hopefully translate into the show.
Will this third attempt at making a Top Gear for american audiences work? It's hard to tell right now. The knee-jerk response would be to simply laugh it off as yet another failed attempt to create an American Top Gear. This attempt, however, feels a lot more sincere than previous versions. Corddry has openly stated that he doesn't want the show to be too scripted - "If we’re ever given a script, I promise the viewers that I’m going to light it on fire and throw it away," he has said quite hilariously in response to the news of the reboot's inception. Hopefully the three new main presenters will have the great chemistry on the show that Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond ended up having (and, to an extent, Chris Harris, Matt LeBlanc and Rory Reid ended up having too).
Top Gear America will be available to stream exclusively on MotorTrend.
