Top Modifications For N55
This is a simple topic covered in detail, how to get the most out of the n55 m235i. Pretty simple breakdown on what I consider to be the best...
Brake pads, SS lines and racing brake fluid. EBC Yellow Pads, Motul 600 fluid, Bimmerworld brake line kit. Optional slotted/drilled/dimpled rotor upgrade.
Suspension: Lowering springs, bumpstops or coilovers with EDC delete (or coding required).
Engine tuning: Flash tune via BM3, Enzo map or JB4, or run both... Just know what you are getting into, BMW can look for codes if they wanted too. Stage 1 piggybacks like Dinan Sport and JB+ are good ways to get a little bump in power for not a lot of money.
Downpipe: Cattless
Muffler: If you want race car, go with a muffler delete straight pipe, if you want tamed go with Mperformance.
Intake: Use the Dinan, no codes unlike some others that are out there.
Intercooler upgrades: I personally run the Dinan, but others are just as good. Make sure all hoses and piping fits for your model and car (ie: Xdrive awd auto).
Charge Pipe and TIC piping: Get it done quick before it pops on you. Change your charge pipe, and if you wanted, all the rubber hosing to metal. You can get a kit from ER. Also, this is a good time to install a turbo inlet pipe from Pure Turbos.
Spark Plugs: S55 plugs are one step colder, N20 plugs are two steps colder. Gap to .18.
TMAP sensor n20: Needed to go over the limit of 21.9 psi. Custom tuning required.
Turbo Upgrades: The Dinan stage 4 turbos and Pure Stage 1 are very similar in performance. 10-15 whp without any PI or meth for fuel. Stage 2 turbos can get you 25whp without fuel upgrades.
Meth and Port Injection: go with a PI kit if you have or will go with stage 2 turbos. If you are stage 1 or stock turbo, meth can get you maxed out and right to the 420- 450whp target.
Wheels: Get a set of lightweight wheels with season specific tires. All seasons are too, but know their limits. Look at tire width and depth as well as recommended temperature and weight for each tire. I like a 18" on a car thats on springs, others like 19" or bigger on a stock suspension.
Tires: Everyone likes things a bit different, so I like a R-compound tire in the summer (i can get about one spring and summer out of a set. Maybe 2 track days) and an all season for the colder months. If it snows enough, I don't plan on leaving the house. Nitto 01 is a great summer tire but super loud. The NT05 is a quieter street tire that can be paired with NT05R drag tires. The MPSS and other comparable tires are great for street, but lack when it comes to real grip but is a great trade off for wet road conditions. I like the DWS06 for all seasons.
Spacers: Yes, figure out whats best for your wheel and tire setup. Most common are 10mm and 12 or 15mm kits.
Fuel: 2 gallons of E85 to a full tank of 93, will be fine for the car on stock LPFP. With an upgraded Fuel-It LPFP you can add more without getting a CEL. Recommended 93-100 octane from good gas station. My car likes BP 93 with 3.2 gallons of E85. It also likes VP MS100 with a 93 mix.
Coding: Use the apps, Carly or Bimmerapp. Both have you use a OBD dongle, and your phone. Pretty simple to use and codes most things with ease. Want to play mp4 videos thru the usb port while driving? Maybe turn up the halo brightness, or make your cars dings sound different.
Resources: I'm a big fan of 2addcicts msg board. Lot's of great information there. Facebook has a few groups for the 2 series.
CF Hood and Trunks: are available, but they are seriously expensive. $2400 for a hood, and about half that for a trunk without shipping costs.
Seats and harness bars: You can swap seats but be aware of the passenger seat occupancy sensor. It will throw a cel unless you figure out how to code it off, or use a virtual sensor to bypass. Stock seats are heavy, and you can save a good amount of weight with some race seats. Harness bars and half cages are available, most are sold as m2 but will fit the m235i. They are again very expensive for kits. $5000 - $6000 for a half roll cage and rear seat delete.
Spoilers, Lips, Diffusers: Mperformance is a great look. After using the OEM and breaking multiple splitters and lips, I only use the ebay ones now. They are considerably cheaper and use the same mold. The ebay splitter and rear diffusers are the same as oem Mperformance parts. I will say the OEM plastics were a little different, but they fit exactly the same. If it doesn't fit right, send it back. CF diffusers need the rear bumper removed to fit.
