Toyota Land Cruiser crushed by dump truck
So, this is what crash tests look like in Australia, is it?
One of the most iconic Top Gear cars has to be the supposedly indestructible Toyota Hilux pickup. Clarkson tried drowning it, burning it and dropping it, but the modest off-roader wouldn’t die. One thing he didn’t try was crushing it with the largest vehicle known to man, a mining dump truck.
Thankfully for those of us that don’t have access to heavy mining machinery, Australian mining group Rio Tinto has shown what would have happened. Albeit by accident.
Tom Price works as a maintenance worker for the Pilbara-based company and somehow found his way behind the wheel of the massive truck without the correct training. Whilst controlling the dumper – or rather losing control – he ran over his own Toyota Land Cruiser turning it into a matchbox model.
According to Rio Tinto, the incident is still being investigated so we don’t really know how the two trucks ended up occupying the same space. However, it’s quite obvious that driving something so big requires a lot of experience before being let loose in a mine.
Thankfully, no one was hurt in the accident, apart from the little Land Cruiser that has proven off-road Toyotas are indeed mortal. Or are they? In fact, I doubt the team that recovered the car tried turning the ignition.
