UK police stop a car that was held together with a scarf

Derbyshire Police stop car that had its suspension components held together by a scarf and some other old tat they had laying around

I've heard of things being held together by a thread before but never a car. Derbyshire Roads Policing Unit tweeted about a shocking incident where they stopped a car and found that it was literally held together by scarf, a dressing gown cord and a lock and chain.

Derby police tweeted: "One of the worst cars ever examined with illegal Tyre & suspension held in place with a wheel clamp, chain & dressing gown cord. #DeathTrap"

The car was an old Suzuki Swift and putting the suspension mess aside, it really does look like it's ready for the scrapheap in the sky. The car has suffered heavy damage to the front quarter and drivers door and as a result rust is setting in.

To make matters worse the car was also running on tyres that were so bald the wire beneath the rubber was showing.

Traffic police often receive some harsh criticism for stopping drivers unfairly but there can be no arguments here. The beat up Suzuki has now been sent to be crushed and I for one am glad this car is now off our roads.

  • What the Police did not realise is that this was the actually a bottom trim level swift. The top of the range model came with duct tape, a broken walkman and a flip flop for the clutch pedal.

  • I'm from Nova Scotia. LOTS of rust buckets because we use salt on our roads in winter and we jut out into the North Atlantic. I've seen a few like this lol, I swear, magic keeps them together.

    • I noticed in Montreal, cars hold up for ten years tops, then they are rotted through.

Then I saw this 20+ year old VW Golf III with no rust whatsoever. Impressive!

    • I too am from NS and once used vice grips to hold a shifter cable together. It's a way of life, and death.

  • Won't need to crush it. Pick it up with a fork lift and drop it. It'll crush itself!

  • Iknow that over the years with rally car drivers have held together by all sorts of means, but quite like this one.
