Unpopular carpinion: SUVs don't deserve all the hate
Have I gone mad? Please hear me out
Before you go to the comment section and start telling me that I have gone mad and giving 1001 reasons why an estate/wagon is a much better deal than an SUV, please hear me out, because SUVs aren't as bad as you think.
#1 They are cool
It's a controversial way to start, not all SUVs are cool but admit it, there are some cool ones out there. Take the Mercedes-AMG G63 as an example, it's arguably one of the coolest cars out there, with its cool boxy design, the fact it basically is a military vehicle with a V8 engine, and the fact many famous people drive around in them.
Next is the Urus, a car many people say doesn't deserve a Lamborghini badge, but I think the opposite, it looks just like a Lamborghini should, with its wild lines and sporty styling, and it drives just like a Lamborghini too (according to reviews), and Lamborghinis are cool, aren't they?
I'm not saying just expensive SUVs are cool, there are some cool affordable ones as well, take the Peugeot 2008 and 3008 as an example, they have an interesting cool design on the outside, and things only get better inside with Peugeot's cool and futuristic interior.
#2 they are practical
I totally understand why many people would own a state/wagon, but SUVs are very practical as well, think of them as raised-up wagons, that basically is what they are, and if you do the maths, some SUVs are more practical than the estate equivalent. Take the Mercedes GLE as an example, the wagon equivalent would be the E-class, which has 640 liters of cargo capacity, the GLE has 720, and the fact it's taller also means it has more space in the cabin.
#3 they can be fun too
Many people complain about the fact that a higher center of gravity ruins handling and how a car feels around corners, while that is true, there are a few examples of SUVs that handle as good, if not better, than many sports cars and hot hatches out there. An example of that is the Porsche Macan GTS, If you watch any review of that car, you'll see what I mean. And there are plenty of fast SUVs out there as well if that's your thing
Next point I want to talk about is off-road capabilities, because going on an off-road adventure is fun. Ok, I know that very few SUV owners take their beloved automobiles off-road, but those who do can have a great time off the road. Take the new Land Rover Defender as an example, it's one of the most capable new cars off-road, and it has plenty of technology that helps in that aspect, and I know this is controversial, but perhaps it's better off-road than the old one. And then there's the Suzuki Jimny, a car loved by many for being relatively affordable and great off-road.
#4 They are comfortable
We all know that a higher ride height means more suspension travel, therefore more ride comfort on the road and over bumps, which means that SUVs like the Bentley Bentayga can offer a very relaxing experience on the road.
#5 seating position
Next up is one of the main reasons why many people buy SUVs, the seating position. The fact you seat up higher means you have a better and more commanding view of the road, and that's what many people like, so it makes sense as to why they buy SUVs.
And the next thing I'll talk about is something that I can say from personal experience, and that is the fact they are easier to get in and out of. My parents own both a 2016 Renault Captur and a 2017 Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake, a compact SUV/crossover and a low-to-the-ground estate/wagon. They are two very distinct cars to get in and out of, to start with, in the Captur it's an easy task, all you have to do is walk in and seat, while it's not as straight forward in the CLA as you have to lean down in order to take a seat, which for some people, especially elderly people, can be a challenging task.
#6 they are popular
I know saying that something is popular isn't necessarily a good thing, but please hear me out, the fact that Lamborghini sells many Uruses means that they can generate enough revenue to keep on making the supercars that we all love, and the same applies to Porsche, Aston Martin, and all the rest.
To conclude, in the end of the day I still prefer an estate/wagon, so don't get mad at me, but at the same time it's not hard to see why SUVs don't deserve all the hate they get.
