Unpopular carpinion: The Polestar 1 really isn't that stunning
Why all the hype?
I'm sure by now you would know that the Polestar 1 is ending production with some gold-black fusion since it is plastered on Drivetribe's homepage and everyone seems to be mourning it as if a royal has passed. To be truthful I couldn't care less and here I will tell you why.
It is just an overpriced S90 coupe
I won't deny that it does look good but then it should for £140,000. The top S90 retails for around half of that and you sit in the drivers seat then realise that they are nearly identical from that seat. You then get out and realise that although it looks good for around £20k less you could have this:
Now this is jaw-dropping. This is far more interesting to look at then the Polestar and it costs £20,000 less! If the S90 coupe(which is what it looks like) cost around £70,000 in top trim and around £50,000 for the base price like an S90 then this would be an invalid argument but it simply costs too much.
The powertrain doesn't get the heart racing either...
Sure it has 600bhp and a 77 mile all-electric range but for the money that is a basic requirement when the rest of the package is what it is. It only has a 2 litre 4 cylinder engine which simply isn't good enough for the money. Now you might be thinking that electric motors, 600bhp and 1,000Nm of torque means astonishing speed but your wrong. 4.2 seconds to 60, 155mph top speed. Again it simply isn't what is expected of a £100,000+ car. These figures are thanks to a 2.3 tonne kerb weight which ruins everything behind the wheel.
Exclusivity is no excuse either
Only 1,500 will be made but does that constitute such a hefty price tag? No it doesn't. It isn't very good in the bends or in a straight line thanks to the weight, the interior is the same as in £40,000 XC40s and you can't even buy it if it did appeal to you.
At this point you might say 'wait, what about using it as a GT car?' Its good at that as a silent car with a splash of leather but it is a Volvo. If you were intent on a GT car then what exactly is wrong with these? At least you can actually buy them, everything about them is a cut above the Polestar and no sane person would call them common.
So here I ask you this: what does the Polestar actually bring to the table?
