Updated 400bhp Audi RS3 hot hatch hits 62mph in 4.1sec
Facelifted Audi RS3 Sportback gets world’s gruntiest five-pot
Audi has given its RS 3 Sportback a 33bhp power boost and styling tweaks to keep it ahead of hyper hatch rivals from BMW and Mercedes.
This isn’t just a chip-tuning job though. Lifted from the TT RS, the new 2.5-litre in-line five is 26kg lighter than the old one thanks to its aluminium, rather than boat-anchor cast iron, crankcase. There’s also dual-injection, one shot of juice entering the cylinder directly, and another firing into the intake manifold, retro-style.
Power is up from 362bhp to 395bhp and torque, previously 343lb ft (465Nm), is now 354lb ft (480Nm), and available all the way through from 1700 to 5850pm.
The zero to 62mph time drops two-tenths to 4.1 seconds, but the top speed is unchanged. The stock limiter comes in at 155mph, but if you’ve got money to burn and no matches to hand, Audi will up that to 174mph for a hefty sum.
The mechanical update brings the RS3 Sportback up to par with the recently announced RS3 saloon, as do the styling mods. A redesigned bumper emphasises the car’s width and LED lamps are standard, with adaptive matrix versions available as an option. Other options include ceramic brakes for the front axle and Audi’s Virtual Cockpit instrument pack.
