Upgrade your Golf GTI almost into an R for just £715
The manual Volkswagen Golf GTI Performance is a wise purchase when it comes to an affordable hot hatchback, featuring 241hp and 273lb-ft (370Nm) of torque from a 2.0L turbocharged engine. Those figures are adequate for such a nimble vehicle, however, one tuning company believes they can do even better and utilise the full potential of the engine.
Who are Mountune?
You may be familiar with Mountune if you are into tuned Fords as that is their speciality, however, they also have a Volkswagen Group division called Mountune 52 (M52). Director of Mountune and M52 states “we are still relatively new to the world of VW performance upgrades but using our knowledge and expertise gained from our time working with Ford vehicles, we have been able to produce a high-quality power upgrade that comes at an affordable price". With over 40 years of experience in the tuning business, it is right to say that you are in safe hands.
Two days ago at their headquarters in Brentwood, they unveiled their mTune handset that allows for Mk 7.5 Golf GTI owners to recalibrate their vehicle's ECU, increasing both performance and torque by 87hp and 92lb-ft respectively.
More power than a Golf R
The final power output is now 306hp and 350lb-ft (475Nm) of torque, which according to Mountune reduces the 0-60mph down from 6.4 to 5.4 seconds. However, other sources have tested the GTI to be even quicker so this upgrade could make it even closer to the Golf R than the tuning company claims. The power figures are significantly higher than the Golf R's 296hp (UK-Spec, US models produce 288hp) and 295lb-ft (400Nm) of torque and almost enough to displace the Golf R's AWD advantage that gives it slightly better acceleration. Keep in mind that this upgrade is called "Stage 1", suggesting even more upgrades are on the way.
The mTune handset can be configured amongst 5 calibration settings, including: Stock, Stage 1, Stage 1 low-torque, Valet and Anti-theft. If you want even more performance and orchestral drama, you will be pleased to know that this Stage 1 system is fully optimised to operate alongside Mountune's own X3 Induction System.
What else included in the package?
Your £715.50 (inc. VAT) is well spent as it includes plenty of kit that you will appreciate. Other than the configurable Stage 1 upgrade, you will receive a gauge display that can monitor OBD data, an adjustable shift-light, a datalogger and a fault-code reader. Other quirky items include a custom Mountune case to hold all these accessories and an M52 badge to install on your vehicle; because why should your powerful GTI look like an ordinary one?
All Mountune 52 products include a 12 month/12,000 mile warranty that protects you against any manufacturing defects, a crucial component often overlooked when it comes to aftermarket tuning.
