US Congress wants carmakers to fit anti-drink driving tech to its vehicles

This new technology is said to be implemented as early as 2026

In a world where cars are beginning to drive themselves, US Congress has had the idea of mandating new anti-drink driving software to cars.

Even though there are so many laws, fines, and penalties that exist to deter people from drink driving, some still do it and this new tech would, in theory, put a stop to it.

So, the United States Congress is trying to stop this but implementing a $1 trillion infrastructure bill that President Biden is expected to sign soon which will help to stop drink driving. Essentially, Congress wants carmakers to install a new technology in its vehicles by 2026 that would prevent drunk driving.

The Transportation Department still needs to do some digging into the kind of technology that would best prevent that, but once it's available, it’ll be expected that automakers selling cars in America must fit it.

Maybe a level of automated driving will work to prevent this, but that would come with a lot of issues in itself. Either way, we are interested to see what will happen.

  • I was just watching a video on this this morning. They want to put a infrared camera in everyone's car that can determine your alcohol level. Plus monitor whatever else they want in your car.

  • Ya, right, the drunks are driving around in their 20 year old pickup trucks. I doubt they will buy a vehicle that hinders their lifestyle, it's not like they don't know they're doing it

  • I just wish we could get Vodka Nancy to not drink and legislate at the same time. Of course her drinking is legendary and not likely to stop...
