US Government selling an 'illegal' 1999 R34 Skyline GTR?!

R34 GTR is famous for not being (yet) legal to imported into the United States, so

Last year Kong Meng Vang owner of Vang’s Dyno Performance in Oklahoma was caught with $5 Million worth of pot.

Subsequently, his properties and a rather impressive car collection were seized by the U.S. Marshals, amongst them is a couple true JDM gems, - a pair of 1994 Toyota Supras, 1991 Acura NSX, 1998 Subaru Impreza WRX STI Type R, 2000 Evo VI Tommi Makinen GSR but most interestingly a 1999 Nissan Skyline GTR R34.

In case you've not heard it's illegal in the United States, as it's illegal to import cars that don't meet the US DOT regulations that are under 25-years old. (it's a pretty loose definition, you are going to need to google it for more details).

Due to this quite a few 'Godzillas' end up in a scrap-yard crusher. So what happens when the government sells you one? Well... It's still illegal, sorry. Description of the auction states the car does not comply with the EPA emissions and cannot be registered or used on road. However, if you are looking for a rather unique (in that part of the world) track-car, this might be your lucky day.

If you are brave enough...

The auction starts at 11 am ET on the 18th of March, so you better hurry up. The car is finished in the iconic Bayside Blue and shows just 74,125 KM on the odometer. It's of course specced with the legendary RB26DETT 2.6 litre twin-turbo engine, 6-speed manual 'box and 4WD.

Not much is known about any possible modifications, nut the car looks largely stock, something that will surely have an impact on the final price.

The engine bay looks pretty much completely stock

Interior isn't in a bad nick but seems to lack the original stereo, the iconic LCD multifunction display seems to be still intact, while it doesn't shock today, back in 1998 it was quite a thing.

If the GTR isn't up to your taste, check out the auction site for the EVO or NSX

Or the bunch Supars, Celicas, WRX's or a Kenworth Dumptruck if that tickles your fancy (or you need to move 1,500 pounds of ganja). Or one of the other 29 cars.

  • Pretty sad losing all your dream cars over a plant - that is legal in a few states, and a few countries not locked down in draconian thought processes.

  • Put it on blocks for five years and try to source the few original parts that are missing. It is truly a unicorn and will only appreciate in value if it is treated accordingly. Hopefully someone like Jay Leno will get their hands on it and throw a little money in to it. The only thing I would worry about is if the police have pulled the interior to bits looking for contraband. There is nothing worse than a heavy hand when working with interior components.

  • Land of the Free, I think Not... Godzilla is banned yet gas guzzlers like the Hellcat and F150's roam freely? Can be jailed for possessing a plant and have your beautiful car collection taken? Illegal to collect rainwater! Yet can own a vast array of assault rifles and handguns.. 'Murica, what a place

    • Godzilla is banned due to never being imported to the US by Nissan thus not going through the local emission & safety tests, thus never getting the certification.
