While some manufacturers dabbled with the idea of the "minivan" as early as the dawn of the automobile, Volkswagen popularized the idea with the Type 2 "Bus" in 1950. Ever since, a van has been present in the VW lineup, right up to the Transporter and Multivan we see today. Sadly, the rebadged Chrysler known as the Routan was the last van VW would sell to US customers. That model was dropped from the lineup three years ago after dismal sales.
Let's dial back to a happier time in VW van history. US sales were lagging at VW at the dawn of the 1990s, and 1991 would mark the final year for the Vanagon, known as the Transporter elsewhere. With a number of models on offer, including a Camper version and available Syncro four-wheel drive, was this livable box the precursor to the SUV?

I think this might have been called the Caravelle in other markets. I had a ride in one once - everything felt like it was hewn out of cement.
Yes, Transporter in some markets, Caravelle in others. Sadly no more VW vans for US customers. Just boring, me-too SUVs.
Not even the Multivan? Hm.
