Vergne takes Formula E pole despite spinning over the line
The 2017/18 Formula E season kicked off earlier today in Hong Kong, surrounded by more hype than ever before. With the likes of Audi and Jaguar now mainstays in the championship, the all-electric motorsport is growing at a rate that can't be ignored and considering how epic the action has been just halfway through the race weekend, this new season could be the best yet.
During qualifying for the Hong Kong ePrix, ex-Formula 1 driver Jean-Eric Vergne was hot on the heels of Audi Sport's Daniel Abt until the final sector of the street circuit. Making up over two tenths of a second, the Frenchman took pole but in the process initiated a slide across the finish line that initially made us all think his pole attempt was over.
Vergne ended up taking pole in this spectacular fashion ahead of Nick Heidfeld and Sam Bird, but it was the Brit who ended up taking the Race 1 victory, with Vergne and Heidfeld making up the rest of the podium.
Race 2 will commence at 6:00am GMT tomorrow and from what we've seen so far, it's very much worth the watch.
