Video: How does a sequential gearbox work?
I grew up in the '90s watching a programme called 'Rallio' in Wales, which, you guessed it, was coverage of the WRC. Another classic Welsh programme name like 'Golfio' and 'Scorio'.
As I don't speak my native Welsh tongue, the commentary went straight over my head, so I was fixated by the onboard footage. I was witnessing a completely new gearbox to me, where McRae and Mäkinen would be slapping the gearstick just forward and back and changing gears faster than I'd ever seem.
Until now, I'd never really thought about the mechanics of how it would work. There is no H-pattern for the gears to slide into. I noticed Donut Media had done an explanation video on the subject and as I'm continuing my knowledge voyage, I thought I'd share it with you guys. Hopefully, you can now tell people that you always knew about it!
