Video: Nio EP9 silently sets a Nurburgring record

If you want to get around the Nurburgring in seven minutes, you're going to need a serious piece of machinery. Something like a Lamborghini Aventador SV or a Nissan GT-R Nismo would fit the bill noisily and neatly, for example.

Alternatively, if you wanted to do it without a screaming engine and the smell of unburnt hydrocarbons, you could take to the track in the new Nio EP9.

It might sound like an epilator, but fortunately it's far more interesting. Outside of clearly being very quick, the new electric supercar – built by Chinese electric start-up NextEV – packs an almighty 1341bhp punch.

This sheer muscle aided the car in setting a new lap record for an electric car, with it pounding around the Nurburgring in just 7m05sec.

NextEV says the run took place in October 2016, but the full onboard video has only recently been published – so now we can ride along to find out just what a lap of the Nurburgring in an electric supercar looks and sounds like. Check it out below...
