Volvo beats Tesla for public trust in poll of autonomous vehicles
In a time of significant change within the automotive industry, there is one brand the public trusts above all others when it comes to autonomous vehicles.
Data from DriveTribe shows that Swedish car manufacturer Volvo stands out ahead of the competition, despite disruptors such as Google and Tesla regularly making headlines with their advances in AI car tech.
The world’s biggest community of car enthusiasts - founded by Clarkson, Hammond and May in 2016 - surveyed its users on which automotive brand’s autonomous car they would feel safest in.
Over half of all 2,520 respondents (52%) said they’d put their trust in Volvo - a brand already synonymous with safety and reliability.
Elon Musk’s Tesla brand are viewed as the second safest brand for autonomous automotive technology, with 20% of the vote.
Audi, who run DriveTribe’s biggest electric car Tribe “Audi Electric”, and whose first fully electric car, the E-Tron, was packed with new technologies, are viewed as the third safest brand for autonomy, with 13% of the vote, far ahead of their German rivals BMW, who received just 1.6% of votes.
DriveTribe is a community with millions of registered users, and provides automotive data insights to auto brands using its backend technology.
When breaking down the results by the country, age or gender of the voter, the top three of Volvo, Tesla and Audi is always the same, with only minor fluctuations in the share of the vote, meaning that worldwide, across men and women of all ages, Volvo are the most trusted brand for safety in autonomy.

“Our recent call for a universal standard of future autonomous car communication, combined with our vision that no-one should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo from 2020, shows that we are committed to the highest levels of safety for anyone using or interacting with our cars in the years ahead.”
