Quite recently it was reported that Volkswagen will be selling Bugatti to Croatian carmaker Rimac and now, a latest report by Reuters suggests that VW is reconsidering the future of Lamborghini and Ducati.

According to the report, VW wants double its value 200 billion euros ($235 billion) and is working on a new “to do list”.

The executives at VW group think that it might not be beneficial to construct EV platforms for supercar and superbike brands. In order to free up cash, VW could sell Lambo and Ducati. At the end, Volkswagen also needs to develop EV platforms for its own vehicles which requires a huge financial outlay.

“We are constantly looking at our brand portfolio, this is particularly true during the phase of fundamental change in our industry. In view of the market disruption, we must focus and ask ourselves what the transformation means for the individual parts of the group."

"Brands must be measured against new requirements. By electrification, by reach, by digitalisation and connectivity of the vehicle. There is new room for manoeuvre and every brand must find its new place”, Chief Executive Herbert Diess told Reuters.

  • I can’t help but feel the push for 100% electrification is premature. There are lots of issues with EVs, not least the issue that many people hate them!

    • Cant agree more with your comment. We should be focusing on making our energy production 100% renewable before even considering switching to 100% fully electric cars. I mean what use is the more "environmental" car if we need so much more...

    • As a rule, EVs are hated by people who haven't tried them. They just work better. There's still room for stuff that works badly, noisily and slowly, for those for whom this is largely part of the fun. For most people, vehicles are like clothes. ...

    • I think its alright to do so but I doubt it would be complete electrification probably going to slowly head in that direction as many lamborghini lovers would hate it if they turned full electric. Same with Ducati, however I don't know much of...

    • ALL brands will be electric, sooner rather than later. The business model for ICE production is crumbling by the day. Now, I love cars and have been involved with them most of my working life in many positions. I've done R&D, prototyping,...

  • Question: who has the resources to buy Ducati and/or Lamborghini AND develop them to at least break even?

  • Never understood why Audi bought Ducati in the first place it was always going to be a short term thing for them. Can only assume they had tech or something which was easy to get through the purchase rather then development spending

    • They are 'halo' brands. They put next to nothing into the parent company beyond reflected glory. So your Skoda Fabia buyer knows that the same people that designed the Veyron also designed his shopping hatchback.
