The welded steel on the SUVs attempts to mask the militarization of the vehicles in satellite imagery. Most of the custom work is color matched to the rest of the car and can also feature painted-on windows.

Though unconfirmed, it's likely that ISIS was using Toyota vehicles that were given to the Free Syrian Army by the US State Department, which could not possibly be where the Kias and Hyundais are from. It's very likely that, since the companies sold cars in Mosul for two years, ISIS has stolen the SUVs from citizens for its own use. Baghdad, 250 miles away, also has several vehicle dealerships where the cars could be from.
