Fortunately, the driver escaped unharmed.

The number of people who drive past flashing lights and boom gates at railroad crossings never fails to astound me. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, you are 40 times more likely to be killed in a collision with a train than a collision with another car.

Filmed and uploaded to YouTube by TrainManBrodie, this video shows a burgundy Chevrolet Tahoe drive around the boom gates at a railroad crossing in Centralia, Illinois, before getting directly t-boned by a cargo train.

The uploader was filming a pair of Canadian National Trains when the accident occurred; and as explained by the narrator, it begins with a north-bound train crossing the road. The gates stay down because a south-bound train is in the vicinity, however the Tahoe driver mistakenly thinks the coast is clear before making the dreadful decision of going around the boom gates.

Luckily, the driver of this accident escaped without harm.

  • He's not just impatient, he's a moron. He had his music up really load, he thought, "Oh, I guess the gate's broken" without even checking to see if there's a train. He's lucky all that got broken was his crappy Chevy

  • WTF was that??? He just drove into the path of the bloody train!! He didn't stall on the crossing, or got bored waiting or anything, he just went in front of hundreds of tonns of metal moving at a considerable speed. He didn't see it, or what??
